Hebrew media reports, he says military (need 10k) new soldiers, can only accommodate enlistment of an additional 3,000 ultra-Orthodox recruits this yr, beyond 1,800 who already drafted annually, he claims gov had one point agreed with ultra-Orthodox, Haredi quota for enlistment would rise 5% annually til reaches 50% eligible within 5-yrs, but disagreements whether to pass law or regulations, coupled arguments over sanctions for draft dodgers, torpedoed negotiations.

Hardliner faces reformist in Iran presidential run-off. Voting is under way to elect a new Iranian president as a hardline conservative goes head-to-head with a reformist. The run-off comes after no candidate secured a majority in the first round of the election on 28 June, which saw a historically low voter turnout of 40%. One of them Dr Massoud Pezeshkian, a former heart surgeon, is critical of Iran’s notorious morality police - but his rival Saeed Jalili favours the status quo.
The election was called after Iran’s previous president Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in May, in which seven others died.

Hamas says it dropped demand Israel vow upfront to end war, but wants mediators’ guarantees. Terror group seeking commitments that fighting won’t restart, negotiations will continue; Israel reportedly displaying 'tough stance'. CIA chief said set to join talks in Doha. Hamas has given initial approval for a US-backed proposal for a phased truce and hostage exchange deal in Gaza, dropping a key demand that Israel give an upfront commitment for a complete end to the war, a Hamas and an Egyptian official said Saturday.

At same time, a key stumbling block appeared to be Hamas’s desire for “written guarantees” from mediators that Israel will continue to negotiate a permanent ceasefire deal once first phase of a ceasefire goes into effect. Hamas representative told Associated Press the group’s approval came after it received “verbal commitments & guarantees” from mediators that war won’t be resumed & that negotiations will continue until a permanent ceasefire is reached. “Now we want these guarantees on paper,” he said

IDF assesses much of Hamas tunnel network still in ‘good functional state’ – Military said to believe Hamas retains limited ability to approach, cross border; civil security heads disturbed, want destruction of tunnels to be top priority. After nine months of war, much of Hamas’s tunnel network is still in a “good functional state” many parts of Gaza, the terror group still has capacity to organize raids close to border with Israel.

Senior Israeli defense officials in January assessed Hamas’s Gaza tunnel network was between 350 to 450 miles long, an astounding figure given that the enclave is only some 140 square miles in total size. Official told Times of Israel it could take years to dismantle tunnels, noting that underground passages must be mapped & checked for booby traps and hostages before Israeli forces can destroy them.

Loss of Maj. Jalaa Ibrahem, 25, a company commander in Combat Engineering Corps’ 601st Battalion, from Druze town of Sajur, came during intense fighting  as Israeli officials signaled the military operation in Strip’s southernmost city was drawing to a close, with Hamas’s formal military structure was close to being dismantled.

Ibrahem’s death brought Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza in military ops along the border with the Strip to 326.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition with far-right parties co-sponsored the resolution. Opposition leader Yair Lapid’s centre-left party left the session to avoid supporting the statement, despite previously saying he favoured a two-state solution, the Times of Israel newspaper reported.

Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, slammed the passing of the resolution.
