Is the Harris Polling Bump Real? Experts Say It’s Too Soon to Tell. Democratic voters are “energized,” one pollster says. Plus: The dangerous job of shipbreaking.

The bet Democratic Party leaders and donors made by pushing Joe Biden out of the 2024 presidential race was that Kamala Harris would be a better candidate to face off against Republican nominee Donald Trump. Early polling suggests this wager is paying off: Harris is outperforming Biden in snapshot surveys taken in the days since she replaced him, even leading Trump in a couple of them.

Trump / Vance need to woo women voters to win.
A warning to Donald Trump & JD Vance.

Tread carefully when it comes to women, including Vice President Kamala Harris.
All signs point to a tight race in November, the GOP ticket is already behind with women: In 5-battleground states, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Harris leads by 9-points or more w/ladies.

Closing gap may be an uphill battle. Big Grin

Harris was expected to have fundraising trouble. Here’s why big donors are actually lining up in droves. The idea that Kamala Harris would be unable to raise money has been quickly dismissed, with enthusiasm for her presidential bid hinging on who she’s up against — and who she’s replacing.

Former President Donald J. Trump questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s identity as a Black woman on Wednesday in front of an audience of Black journalists, suggesting his opponent for the presidency had adopted her racial profile as a way to gain a political advantage. “She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person,” he said of Ms. Harris, whose mother was Indian American, whose father is Black and who has always identified as a Black woman.

Ms. Harris has long embraced both her Black and South Asian identity. She attended Howard University, a historically Black institution,& pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha, nation’s first sorority established for Black college women. Headlines from her earliest political victories dating back to early 2000s highlighted both identities. Trump’s remarks prompted gasps & jeers from audience at National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago. Former president’s combative appearance there was one most unusual of the campaign so far as he sparred with reporters over diversity efforts, repeated falsehoods about a range of subjects & told group that he was “best president for the Black population” since Abraham Lincoln.

Harris slices Trump’s national lead in half: New polling average. Vice President Harris halved former President Trump’s 2024 lead in a newly relaunched national polling average that replaces President Biden with Harris as Trump’s likely Democratic opponent.

The first iteration of Cook Political Report’s (CPR) new average, relaunched on Wednesday, shows Trump leading Harris by 1.3 points — 47.5 percent support to 46.2 percent. In the previous polling average, on July 21, Trump was leading Biden by 2.7 points — 47.4% support to 44.7%.

The relaunched polling average includes 15 surveys of hypothetical Harris-Trump head-to-head match-ups conducted in the last 60 days. The polls are weighted by how recently they were conducted, according to CPR.

Vice President Kamala Harris, grappling with how to keep early 2024 Presidential election momentum alive, is also preparing for a crucial week that includes her most critical decision yet: choosing a running mate.

Harris was the only candidate eligible to receive votes after no other candidate qualified by a deadline last week. She officially claimed the nomination Monday night when the DNC released final results.

Harris’s VP pick: The likely Democratic nominee effectively has a deadline of Tuesday to select who will be her running mate. Her list has been whittled down to six contenders, AP sources say.

Harris and Walz hold first rally together as new Democratic ticket. Tim Walz touted his rural roots and said Donald Trump would take the US "backwards" as he appeared for the first time as Kamala Harris’s running mate at a raucous Democratic Party rally.

At the event in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, the party’s new nominee for vice-president said their Republican rivals in November's election were "weird as hell".

The Minnesota governor spoke in front of thousands of supporters hours after was announced as Ms Harris’s pick for his role.

The Trump campaign, meanwhile, was quick to attack Mr Walz as a "dangerously liberal extremist".

She went with someone not considered a top-tier possibility just a week ago - Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. A popular Midwestern governor, veteran, former schoolteacher and high school football coach, he can appeal to both progressive and centrist Democrats as well as those who don’t normally vote for Democrats anymore: Blue-collar, white voters in key battleground states.

A quip of his from 2-weeks ago - “Guys are just weird” describing Mr Donald Trump and Mr JD Vance - catapulted him to being VP nominee. His opening performance shows he brings campaign a “happy warrior” vibe, one not afraid to engage in partisan combat but can do so with a smile while still carrying a proverbial stiletto.

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz want to make America joyful again.

The vice president’s rocking rollout of her running mate on Tuesday sent jolts of energy through a huge crowd, as the pair personified the extraordinary transformation of the 2024 election campaign.

Such a scene would have been unthinkable even three weeks ago — in a Democratic Party that believed it was doomed to a disastrous defeat as an aged president resentfully faced a revolt that ultimately ended his reelection bid.

Trump’s own playbook — in quest to win the White House. The vice President Kamala Harris is capitalizing on the trappings of office — and the power of strong imagery — to sustain the momentum surrounding her candidacy in hopes of building a cultural movement for the Democratic ticket in ways that long eluded President Joe Biden. In her quest to defeat Donald Trump, she’s also taking a page out of the former president’s own playbook — and drawing his ire in the process.

She didn’t just walk onto the stage for one of her biggest rallies of the year last week outside Detroit. Instead, her team allowed anticipation to grow as Air Force Two slowly taxied into view of a crowded airport hanger, with strains of Beyoncé’s “Run the World” pulsing through the air. The choreography matched closely the types of events Trump held as president, his walk-out song “God Bless the USA” now replaced by another Beyoncé song, “Freedom,” as Harris stepped from her plane.

Yet for Democrats, it was a level of enthusiasm – and stagecraft – not seen for years. The Harris v. Trump debate is already looming as another historic pivot point in an extraordinary campaign
“We’ve got a hot ticket,” said Danielle Tucker, a loyal Democrat, taking in the scene as she and her friends waited for Harris and running mate Tim Walz to make their entrance at the Detroit-area rally. “We’ve got a ticket that brings us joy – before it was just a lot of darkness going on.”

Deploying presidential optics is nothing new for an incumbent seeking reelection. During Trump’s first term, he held countless rallies across the country using (a slightly larger) Air Force One. The iconic blue-and-white planes, emblazoned with the words “United States of America,” convey without parallel the power of incumbency.

New Battleground Polls Show Harris Has Fundamentally Changed the Race. On question after question, at least for now, most voters don’t seem to have major reservations about her.

If there were any doubt whether Kamala Harris has transformed this year’s presidential election, this morning’s latest New York Times/Siena College polls put it to rest.

In our first swing state polls since her entry into the race, Vice President Harris leads Donald J. Trump by 4-points each in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin among likely voters. It’s a major shift from previous Times/Siena polls, which found Mr. Trump leading Ms. Harris & President Biden by an average of one or two points each across the same three states.

Sometimes, it can be hard to explain why polls shift from week to week or month to month. In today’s polarized politics, it can even be hard to explain why voters ever shift at all. In this case, it’s easy: Ms. Harris’s entry into the race has upended the fundamentals of this election.
