Extending a pattern stretches back decades, White voters without college degree, cornerstone of modern GOP coalition declined by a little more than 2% as a share of eligible voters since 2020, falling below 40% of eligible voting pool for 1st time. A new analysis of latest Census Bureau data by demographer William Frey shared with CNN. While working-class Whites is shrinking Frey found both Whites with at least a 4-year college degree & voters of color have each increased since 2020 by about a single percentage point as a share of eligible voters. Those increases also continue long-term trends seen well educated Whites grow represent more than 1-in-4 eligible voters & people of color rise past 1-in-3.
Trends help explain why former president has devoted so much effort to reaching beyond his traditional base of White voters without a college education to attract more Black & Latino voters, especially men, in turn, trends help explain the emphasis vice president is placing on attracting more college-educated White voters who have previously leaned toward GOP — a priority she underscored by barnstorming across populous white-collar suburbs outside Philadelphia, Detroit & Milwaukee with GOP former Rep. Liz Cheney.
