SINGAPORE: Lorry driver Jahir was cycling to buy lunch near his home on his day off last Sunday (Oct 20), when he saw a crowd gathering at the foot of a nearby Housing and Development Board (HDB) block.
Curious, the Bangladeshi national rode over to check out the commotion. To his alarm, he saw a boy standing on a ledge on the third storey of the block. Mr Jahir, who has worked in Singapore for 17 years, sprung into action immediately, working together with Myanmar national Sa Thu Ya Aung to rescue the three-year-old boy from the window ledge at Block 350C Canberra Road.
For their heroics, both men were each presented with Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) Community Lifesaver Award at 3rd SCDF Division’s headquarters in Yishun on Friday. The award is presented to members of the public whose actions contributed to saving lives and involved an element of self-risk.
