McFarland was nominated ambassadorship of S'pore in May 2017, she a former deputy US national security adviser, worked under Michael Flynn, a key figure in Russia investigation. However, US Senate did not confirm her appointment after she became embroiled in controversy over Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian officials, reported the New York Times.
