My take is many Sinkies adopted an English name, cos it is easier to remember than our Chinese names, and it seems to be the in-thing in that era.....

Correct! English names easier to remember in those days. Not so for this generation English names.  Not the typical English names like Peter, Joseph, Paul, Mary, Susan, Janice... Now all the English names are so foreign never heard before like the girlfriend of the Insurance Agent who died in that  car explosion. What's her name? I can't recall.
