To be fair to his predecessors, Xi did not do it alone.
China's journey out of poverty started with Deng Xiaoping. Obviously, for such a big population like China's, it could not be done overnight or within Deng's lifetime. But after Deng, there were Jiang and Hu who also contributed to China's growth, development, and increasing prosperity.
Xi happened to be the one in charge when the harvest of more than 50 years of work by his predecessors bear fruit.
Apart from the leaders, may I suggest that the China of today is the collective blood, sweat, and tears of generations which either had passed away or are now very old? The post-80-ers and now post-90-ers are enjoying the fruits but it is not their hard work.
That being said, it is not true that there is zero poverty in China. No country can ever achieve that. Japan, the US, Singapore, every country will always have a few percentages of people who are poor for all sorts of reasons.
