With the 2 big powers putting on the worse behaviors and painting themselves into a tight corner should either side back down they will lose face and be humiliated.

The rising tensions too can lead to irrational actions and stupidity . Xi cannot lose face and Pelosi faces mid term elections .backing down will give opponents ammo to hit at her.

Only Tsai has room to manuevre and be the adult in the room as the playground quarrel threaten to escalate to a bloody nose.

Both Taiwan and US gains nothing from this visit. China perceive itself to be humiliated if visit goes through. Pelosi gives ammo to Republicans for the upcoming elections if she backs down. Republicans are now clamoring for her to go just like the UK Labor party urging Brexit so that the Conservatives trap themselves in a minefield. The toxicity of US politics get mixed into geopolitical tensions.


She should thank Pelosi for her flattering intentions go visit Taiwan in support of it's Democrats but it is really too inconvenient to host her in the midst of rising tensions. Only Tsai has the power to defuse tensions and go on the path of least damage that allow both sides to get off their cornered positions. She should do it. 

The response from both sides to up the ante on an issue that should be quietly discussed and managed  shows the deteriorating relations between both powers. Newt Gingrich visited Taiwan during a time when relations were much better.
