In an interview with ABC7, Chester Chong, a community leader in Monterey Park, suggested that this could be due to family jealousy, not hate crimes.

Mr. Chong said: "As far as I know, his wife went to the dance hall, but he couldn't come, so he got angry, brought a gun and shot everyone."

Mr. Chong attributed this tragedy to the problem of indiscriminate use of guns in the US.

“Unfortunately, the government does not control guns, does not guarantee the safety of people, not just this community, but the entire Los Angeles area. I don't believe that people can own guns, I think only law enforcement officers, meanwhile, anyone can have a gun at home," Mr. Chong said.

After hearing the report, President Joe Biden offered condolences to the families of the victims and ordered flags to be lowered at half-mast at the White House and all federal government buildings in memory of the victims.
