Contaminated cough syrup in the crosshairs of Dutch inspections
#2

In 2022, more than 300 children, mostly aged under 5, died from acute kidney injury in Gambia, Indonesia and Uzbekistan. These deaths were suspected to be caused by contaminated medicines, the WHO said in a statement on 24 January. Over-the-counter cough syrups had high levels of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol.

“These pollutants are toxic chemicals used as industrial solvents and can be fatal even if taken in small amounts. They should never be found in medicines," said the WHO.

The World Health Organization said seven countries had reported finding contaminated syrups in the past four months and called on the 194 member states in the organization to act immediately to prevent more deaths.
