A man accused of keeping a woman as a slave has been committed to stand trial after failing to pay a lawyer to represent him and his wife at court.

Chee Kit 'Max' Chong, 44, pleaded not guilty on Monday in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court to three slavery charges after being denied an adjournment so that he could pay his barrister to represent him at the preliminary hearing.
