When China's system which was Mao Zedong's version of Marxism, Leninism all mixed up, and adapted to Mao's whims and fancies, failed and brought China to its knees, Deng inherited a China which was for all intents and purposes bankrupt. He knew he could not continue with Mao's madness 

He made a trip to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. When he returned to China, he tore away the Red Curtain which devastated China and said: Open up! And especially learn from Singapore!

And that's the dawn of 改革开放。

Since then, thousands of Chinese officials had come to our various ministries to learn from us.

China switched from being a country where the State owned everything to a capitalist system with Chinese characteristics which is basically the Singapore model. But they wouldn't say it.
