Under the law, employers still have the flexibility to transfer older staff to their subsidiaries or other companies, and may also terminate them with financial compensation, if the first two options are considered unfeasible. Discriminatory practices against older workers may even be seen by younger colleagues as necessary to resolve the growing problem of unemployment and underemployment among their cohort of degree holders. Junior employees with aspirations to climb the corporate ladder may see older co-workers as a hindrance to their ambitions. Young Singaporeans entering the workforce must be made aware of who contributed to their subsidised education through primary and secondary school, and enabled them to benefit from student loans in university.  Apart from their parents or grandparents, it was taxpayers - many of whom are nearing retirement age - who contributed to Government coffers to help make this possible.
