In ancient times, there is nothing much for the people to do to keep themselves occupied. No TV to watch, no electricity, no computer games etc. What else can they do other than enjoying sex with multiple partners and finding work in fishing (preaching). Perhaps that was how multiple marriages have come to be acceptable in Islam as the prophets themselves had  many.

I went to do a search on the internet, and what I've read was correct. Polygamy was allowed to support the women and children whose husbands and fathers have died.

That context was a period of tragedy in Islam after the battle of Uhud, when dozens of men from the still formative Muslim community in Medina were killed in one day. Numerous women and children were left without support. To deal with this problem, Allah revealed the verse permitting men to be polygamous.
