Polygyny has been permissible for thousands of years before our prophet. Many of the previous prophets before him had many wives. But when our prophet came, the rule for polygynous marriage became more stringent, but still allowed albeit for some men only. Most Muslim men only have 1 wife because they cannot afford more than 1 and even if they can afford it, many don't want to because of the responsibilities, or a jealous wife.

Again, the polygyny rule enshrined in the Shariah is to protect the women. Cannot suka suka take a woman and then dump her afterward. She rugi.

Can understand why it was accepted for thousands of years. There were nothing much for them to to do other than preaching and having sex to pass time. Obviously present days prophets would not want to lose out on this  and continue to upheld this priviledge.
