The most effective one is still the mosquito net.  Even since it was installed years ago,  we never have had a mosquito problem in our apartment.  Sometimes,  we got one or two flying in together with us when we left the door wide open but they soon disappeared after a day or two.  I fixed all the nets DIY and cost me less than $30/= except for some timber work on the metal window frame.  Fixing was a breeze using staple gun.
