He claimed the problem began right after he resigned from his first tenure as the prime minister in 2003 and handed over the reins to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad blamed his successors for causing division among the Malays, alleging that their incompetence caused the community to abandon Umno.

Former PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi wanted to spur the Malays onto greater heights by advising them to discard the crutch mentality of handouts, or they would come to rely on wheelchairs in the future. However, he was too afraid to follow through, knowing that most Malays lacked the intellect or drive for hard work.
