Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since it defeated Syria in the 1967 war. Israel reiterates that it has a right to occupy this high ground in order to defend its borders. The plateau provides a defensive advantage as it enhances Israel's control over the Golan Heights as well as prevent Iran from establishing another front to attack the Jewish state from southern Syria from where the Syrian artillery used to pound Israeli settlements from the high ground.
