This new Laos HSR will make travelling into China (Yunan) via convenient.
The 西双版纳 station above is the 2nd HSR stop (100km) from the Laos border.
And NE Thailand (Nong Khai) will just be 4hrs from the China/Laos border.

Best is to be able to get a China PR for long-term stay in this Yunan region which has pleasant weather.
Hainan used to be popular but due to increasing food prices, many NE China old folks are now moving to Yunan to avoid the harsh winter. Accommodation can be cheap if one stays in rented apartments/rooms.
From 西双版纳 , one can make short trips to nearby cities like Lijiang and Dali, or east to Guizhou/Hunan (e.g. Zhangjiajie).
Bangkok will be very near too once the Thailand HSR link to the Laos border is completed.
