“What he wants to see is a total collapse of the Canadian economy because that will make it easier to annex us,” he told a news conference Tuesday. “That is never going to happen. We will never be the 51st state.”
In response to Canadian countermeasures, Mr. Trump threatened even more punishing tariffs.
“Please explain to Governor Trudeau of Canada that when he puts on a retaliatory tariff on the U.S. our reciprocal tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!” he said on Truth Social.
“This is going to be tough,” Trudeau said. “But this country is worth fighting for.”
“We’re insulted and we’re angry, but we’re Canadian, which means we’re going to stand up for each other. We’re going to fight, we’re going to win,” he said.
“I’m here with a message of hope,” Mr. Poilievre said. “We will overcome this attack on our economy.”
“I am far from being certain that threatening the United States not to supply them with electricity is such a good idea,” he said, suggesting that it could have longer term negative implications. “I understand that in a crisis, we want to show muscles and say big words. But sometimes it’s not the best.”
