54 million of the 145 million eggs imported by the government from March to July were sent to be destroyed due to their expiration.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Lai Ching-te (賴清德) remains the favorite for the Taiwan presidency according to a new poll, though the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate has shed significant support since the same poll was taken last month.
The Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF) released the poll results on Tuesday (Sept. 26). It showed Lai leading the race with 31.4% of the vote, followed by Taiwan People’s Party candidate Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) on 23.1%. Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) placed third with 15.7%.
Meanwhile new entrant and independent candidate Foxconn founder Terry Gou (郭台銘) polled in last with 10.5%. Vice president for the ruling DPP party Lai shed over 10% support compared to TPOF’s last poll, however this poll did not survey support for the then undeclared Gou.
TPOF’s Chair You Ying-lung (游盈隆) said Lai’s drop in support was likely due to a recent controversy surrounding imported eggs. This controversy caused Taiwan’s agriculture minister Chen Chi-chung (陳吉仲) to resign, and resulted in over 54 million imported eggs being slated for destruction.😪😭
TPOF’s polling also showed over 56% were dissatisfied with Chen’s response. Chen has defended his actions throughout the saga, even after his resignation was accepted.

Ko said (Thurs) evening, he will communicate with the “greatest flexibility,“We hope results discussion will be acceptable to supporters of all parties.” Ko’s campaign manager said negotiations on a TPP-KMT alliance would be complete by the end of the month.
Speculation possible TPP-KMT collaboration has been brewing many months after Ko consistently polled ahead of KMT’s Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) in most public opinion surveys. Polling showed there is a chance a Ko-Hou pairing could defeat current presidential front-runner Lai Ching-te (賴清德).
Ko has said that if any collaboration (agreement) between parties is reached, the presidential candidate running mate pairing should be decided by a poll. He also said he would like to publicly debate Hou before any poll is held.
Speaking in TV interview (Thurs) Hou said idea will be part of discussions. Hou said - high hopes for the negotiations and that there are no factions among the opposition. SThere is only the “Republic of China, elimination of Taiwan independence and cross-strait faction,” Hou said. Both Hou and Ko's teams said that both parties must tolerate each other for the good of the country.

The results of the petitions will be announced by the CEC on Nov. 14.
Should Gou successfully secure a spot on the ballot, he will run against three other presidential candidates: New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜), Chairman of the Taiwan People's Party Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and the incumbent Vice President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chair, Lai Ching-te (賴清德).

Hou yielded ground for first time in an interview with United Daily News. Liberty Times & China Times, saying he would not insist on being presidential candidate with joint ticket smaller opposition Taiwan People's Party (TPP).
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/5023648
Instead, he expressed openness to running as vice president alongside rival candidate Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) of the TPP to unseat Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Hou stressed the necessity of being on the same ballot with Ko."For KMT-TPP alliance to completed and achieve a rotation of parties, the names of both individuals [his and Ko's] must be on the same ballot," he said.
With 2024 presidential election in Taiwan about 80 days away, polls suggest if DPP's presidential candidate Lai Ching-te (賴清德) would win comfortably over Hou and Ko, who are running neck and neck and split most of the opposition support fairly evenly. Another opposition figure, Foxconn founder Terry Gou (郭台銘), who is running as an independent, has trailed in the polls with less than 10 percent support.
KMT/TPP have been deadlocked on how to present a unified front for 2024 election to challenge DPP because both Hou and Ko want to head a presidential ticket, and both parties have disagreed on how to determine the best choice for president.

The polling methodology proposed by the TPP involves 50% representation from landline surveys and 50% from mobile phone surveys, or exclusively using mobile phones. Hou told 3-media outlets that top billing could be decided by incorporating both a primary & polls, with each given equal weight, an apparent compromise intended to resolve the deadlock. Hou's campaign office previously announced plans to conduct primary on Nov. 4. According to Hou, the preparation for such a vote would take approximately 10 days.
Based on timeline, he said he anticipated a response from Ko by Oct. 25. Taiwan presidential candidates have to formally register their candidacies between Nov. 20 and 24, meaning that if an agreement to collaborate is not achieved by then, the opposition could have three presidential tickets on the ballot, which would likely hand the election to the DPP's Lai.
Hou told reporters. KMT/TPP collaborate election strategy, it should not be a zero-sum game or an elimination match where one side takes all. Cooperation is essential, regardless who takes the lead & who plays a supporting role," he said.
Ko's campaign office said Ko will hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon to address the matter.
