Discovery
The NASA-funded ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile, first reported observations to the Minor Planet Center of comet 3I/ATLAS on July 1, 2025. Since the first report, observations made before the discovery were gathered from the archives of three different ATLAS telescopes around the world and Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility at the Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California. These “pre-discovery” observations extend back to June 14, 2025.

Interstellar Comet Cruising Toward Mars Flyby in Early October. NASA has been studying the icy visitor 3I/ATLAS with space telescopes including Hubble, Webb, and SPHEREx. When the comet passes Mars on Oct. 3, multiple spacecraft there might catch a glimpse. Comet is on course to pass behind Sun in late October, & venture past Jupiter in March 2026, on its way out of our solar system... Big Grin

Some say 3I/Atlas is just a comet, there’s a problem:

No comet-like tail has been detected.

  1. It glows in front instead of behind.

• Its path is so perfectly aligned with planetary orbits that the odds of this being a coincidence are just 1 in 20,000.

Could 3I/Atlas be alien technology? A mothership releasing probes? Or simply a cosmic anomaly?

Even NASA doesn’t have the answers yet.???.

In this episode of Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, we dive into science, the skepticism, and the staggering possibilities of what 3I/Atlas might really be.???.

In 1977, Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope received an unusually strong narrowband radio signal, leading to widespread excitement the possibility of having encountered evidence of life beyond Earth.

At the time, astronomer Jerry Ehman spotted the highly unusual outburst in printed out records, annotating the major radio band fluctuation with the word “Wow!” in red pen, thereby giving it a memorable nickname: the “Wow! Signal.” Incident has remained a mystery for decades, never spotted again in over 48 years, leaving plenty of questions in its wake. Where did it come from, and why did it only last for 72 seconds?.

Now, Harvard astronomer and alien hunter Avi Loeb has a wild new theory about the signal. In a new blog post, he suggested that interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, which is currently cruising through our solar system, could’ve sent off the signal back in 1977 — when it was still 600 times the distance between Earth & Sun away from us.

Examining the sky coordinates of the object and the Wow! Signal, Loeb concluded that the “chance of two random directions in the sky being aligned to that level is about 0.6 percent.”

“If the ‘Wow! Signal’ originated from 3I/ATLAS, how powerful was the transmitter?” he wrote, once again raising possibility that object could be an artifact from an advanced extraterrestrial civilization.

Ever since it was first observed in July, 3I/ATLAS — only the third interstellar object ever spotted — has fascinated scientists. Loeb has previously pointed to the object’s unusual chemical makeup, its peculiar path taking it close to the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, & its enormous suspected size to suggest that it could be a piece of technology sent to us by an alien race.

For his latest theory about the Wow! Signal, Loeb suggested that 3I/ATLAS would’ve had to have a power source of 0.5 to 2 gigawatts to send off the Wow! Signal from 600 astronomical units away, equivalent to the “output of a typical nuclear reactor on Earth.”

Most recently, researchers from the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, which was home to the world’s largest single-aperture telescope, are re-analyzing unexplained radio signals.

As part of the “Arecibo Wow!” project, a team of scientists honed in on the 1977 signal, as Space.com reported last month, creating the most precise characterization of it to date.

So far, the group’s latest findings support a natural astrophysical origin — not proof of an intelligent extraterrestrial civilization. However, their research “doesn’t close the case,” but “reopens it, but now with a much sharper map in hand,” Méndez explained.

“We aim to archive and share all data from the Big Ear telescope by 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of the Wow! Signal,” he told Space.com.

In 48 years, it has traveled about 22 light-hours away — yet that’s still just a tiny step compared to the vastness of the universe.

Scientists estimate it will take 30,000 years for Voyager 1 to finally cross the outer edge of the Oort Cloud, define as true boundary of our solar system. By then, human civilization still exist on Earth to remember this journey? 🌍✨

NASA Just Released This Incredible 3I/ATLAS Image:
NASA has released what may be clearest image ever of 3I/ATLAS
interstellar comet as it nears the Sun. Taken with the crisp vision of the Hubble Space Telescope, new image showcases comet’s coma and tail in exquisite detail — enabling scientists to refine estimates of its nucleus size and activity.

In this video, we unpack:
What features stand out in this latest release — jets, spikes, or asymmetriesHow Hubble’s capabilities allow details invisible to ground telescopes to emerge

What the improved clarity reveals about nucleus dimensions (from hundreds of meters to kilometers) and dust dynamics. Why this image could shift prevailing hypotheses about 3I/ATLAS’s origin and structure

What other missions (like JWST, Mars orbiters, or ESA instruments) might still reveal. If you follow interstellar comets, cosmic anomalies, and deep space imaging, this release is unmissable...

Scientists are baffled by 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object whose mass is estimated to exceed 33 billion tons—far too heavy to behave like a typical comet. Despite showing signs of outgassing, it lacks the expected non-gravitational acceleration, suggesting an unusually dense core. Its mysterious properties and hyperbolic path through the solar system are challenging existing models of small bodies and interstellar visitors, making it one of the most puzzling cosmic objects ever observed.

A tiny, timeworn traveler from another star system has delivered a big message: it carries water. This summer, astronomers spotted 3I/ATLAS – the third confirmed interstellar comet – slipping into our solar system after eons adrift between the stars. When a team at Auburn University pointed NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory at the newcomer, they caught something ground telescopes can’t see. The researchers a faint ultraviolet glow from hydroxyl (OH) gas, the telltale breakdown product of water vapor. This is the first detection of OH from this object and a clear sign that 3I/ATLAS is releasing water.

A universal yardstick for comets
In comet science, water is the baseline. In our own solar system, researchers use water production to gauge a comet’s overall activity and to compare how other gases are released as sunlight warms the nucleus.
