Thailand aims to become first BRICS member in Southeast Asia, eyeing more development opportunities

Thailand will apply to join BRICS to become the group's first member from Southeast Asia, after the Thai cabinet has approved the letter of intent for the country to join the organization, a Thai government spokesperson was cited by media reports as saying on Tuesday.

From the perspective of the BRICS group itself, analysts said that the expansion of BRICS to include more members helps create a more balanced global economy and push for further development of the Global South.

Joining the BRICS countries will enhance Thailand's international status and increase Thailand's opportunities on the international stage, the spokesperson said.

Indonesia made the point of attending the summit of the club of emerging economies known as BRICS in South Africa last week, but it politely turned down an invitation to join the group, which is expanding its membership to strengthen its hand in managing global economic affairs.

While Indonesia shares many of BRICS’ goals, for now, it is pursuing its own path, different from the other major emerging economies. A wise decision given the uncertainties about where BRICS is heading amid concerns that BRICS is turning into an anti-West group, led by China and Russia. Besides, all the BRICS countries are having major economic problems thus raising questions about the group’s effectiveness in championing global economic reforms.

BRICS pushing for common currency, in bid to reduce reliance on US dollar: South African envoy.

Regarding the BRICS currency, the taskforce formed by the financial ministers of the member states will have a meeting in May to move corresponding discussions forward, with a focus on key issues including promoting greater stability of international monetary and financial systems, the South African envoy said.

The BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) was created in mid-2014 by the governments of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It will have a fairly large capital contribution – initially of US$ 50 billion – from BRICS countries and can grow up to $100 billion with contributions from other countries.

The five BRICS members are likely to each contribute US$2 billion initially to the new bank's capital or US$10 billion in all, which will be supplemented by US$40 billion of contingent capital or guarantees from shareholders, making US$50 billion. This could be doubled over time.

New members must contribute to the BRICS Bank too. Not a free ride la..
