This sort of sudden lame balloon “story” twist that doesn’t even pass the laugh test to sell the Biden administration as being tough on China indicates that it is likely that major concessions were made to the Chinese during the Blinken trip and Biden is preparing the ground to manage domestic expectations.

The fact that one senior US official after another were almost openly pleading to visit China followed by a non-response from Blinken despite a number of diplomatic protocols bordering on insults to the Secretary of State during his China visit hints at how difficult the situation is currently for US.

Another very strong signal is the sudden insertion of a short meeting between Blinken and Xi. IIRC this never appeared in the official itinerary and was only announced shortly before Blinken was due to leave China. It cannot be Xi suddenly wanting to meet Blinken at the eleventh hour out of nowhere, so the most likely explanation is the US made major concessions to meet Chinese demands during the earlier talks with Wang and Qin.

Blinken was forced (literally) to open state the US does not support TW independence before he was allowed to meet Xi.

The short 38-min long session seating arrangement says it all for the cameras just to make the pont who is the Boss now.

Yes, I would say the main purpose of such a presentation isn't to really humiliate Blinken or US per se, but rather to educate US vassals on the current state of affairs between China and US. Nothing knocks sense into thick skulls better than a well done photo ops as the western mainstream media has shown.

Biden and his administration know how bad the this is going to go for their standing amongst Americans and current allies, hence this rather comical and desperate attempt to spin the whole balloon saga as evidence of toughness.

But of course Xi has to Chair this meeting, as his title is President, the highest rank in China politically

Blinken is just a Defense Secretary, right? I think Wang Yi is higher rank than this Blinken

IAM more intrigued by the large mural behind Xi, looming majestic

IMO, that not even a "meeting" as the heavy lifting work were already done by Xi's senior officials like Wang Yi and Qingang during the 2 days visit.
Blinken was left with barely 40 min on the final day with Xi . Notice only Xi and Blinker were unmasked and no display of state flags in the hall ...meaning there is nothing much to say liao. The added insult is just last week Bill Gate, as a private American citizen, received a much warmer and 1-to-1 reception with Xi than a VIP from US gov... That message is clear for the World to see just how Chinese see American Gov today.

I suspect that Blinken went in with a (few) request/s (for assistance) but was rejected. That's why the outburst by Biden. Something must have poked Biden and made him angry enough to make such an outburst.

I beg to differ. There would be no need to do a last minute arrangement for a Xi-Blinken meeting if it were a simple outcome of Blinken requested and was told to get lost. There probably wouldn't even be a need for Wang to meet him over 3+ hours the next day as Qin's rejection would have sufficed on the first day.

Also if Blinken was already rejected by Qin, there really wouldn't be any incentive for him to take up such a humiliating photo setup to meet Xi. This sort of poor optics isn't about Blinken per se, but has deep implications to US interests and power dynamics with both its allies and enemies.

Also if Biden didn't get what he wanted and was truly angry, he would have hit China with real provocative stuff like saying things that imply he recognizes Taiwan's independence, promising to sell real cutting edge weapons, up the ante on the Tech war etc. Instead he went back to an old balloon issue and came up with an idiotic explanation on a personal level that Xi was angry because he didn't know the balloon even though he's a dictator.

That sounds very juvenile and more likely targeted at pacifying the American public and those pesky chicken hawk MPs. The idea is to shout some nonsense that sounds so silly that nobody will take it seriously and thus will not jeopardize whatever the outcomes of the CN-US negotiation and yet allow the mainstream media to come up with dramatic gungho headlines and manage mostly internal pushback.

Xi must forgave Brandon - The 80 years old POTUS forget his mouth when he was so happy that his criminally charged son Hunter Biden was given a slap on the wrist  by a US court for drug abuse, tax evasion and illegally carrying gun just yesterday.
