When the elderly have children who are unable or unwilling to give them financial support, but the Govt does (even if it is from taxes collected from the seniors' offspring), then they will view the Govt as their lifeline. That is how to buy votes at the GE.

That is exactly what the Euro countries did. And yet, Skandinavia countries citizens are so joyful and peaceful with their govt. Their countries are just as rich and successful. Not forgetting that their ministers don't self entitled to huge salaries and bonus payouts.
