Conspiracies aside, the most likely reason for the wide miss in expectations by western economists and media is probably an inaccurate information close loop that resulted in an unhealthy deviation from reality.

At the end of the day, the property market downturn is a controlled demolition by the government as opposed to a systemic crash. The media and politicians try to link this to Japan in the 1990s which in turn influences the academics to focus too much on this angle.

The environment is also further poisoned by inaccurate headline news giving people the wrong impression that the whole world up in arms erecting trade barriers with China. The reality is other than 4E + 27EU + JP/KR, nobody is slugging out with China. Even among the 4E + 27EU + JP/KR, most of them are all talk and no action business as usual.

The economists make their projections under such undue influence and their forecasts are then further cited as evidence by media and politicians that the end is near. It's a classical demonstration of information close loop and alternate bubble universe.

And of course we have the whole lot of course peddlers and influencers who cannot even differentiate the stock market and national economy spouting whatever nonsense as long as they can sell their wares.

News came out around 10:00 am.  The market went up a little but ended up at the day's low.  Market players not excited. See how tomorrow will perform.

The Chinese .market is subservient to US$ strength...what GDP growth beat etc is useless . ...when Yuan falls against USD, people dump Yuan investments....because the depreciation harms investment returns.

The US market fall might have affected the sentiment. Likely the investors were looking at the QOQ growth of only 1.6% (after adjustment) rather than YOY growth of 5.3%. This chart actually showed a decline in QOQ growth (raw)

People talk about good YOY growth, you die die must talk about QOQ growth!  Rotfl

You don't know that YOY growth is the most appropriate yardstick? Do you want to talk about month to month growth or week to week growth?  Rotfl
