Civil War in Myanmar

Rescuers Overstretched as Floods Trap Thousands in Naypyitaw
Torrential rains lashed the administrative capital of Naypyitaw, claiming at least 19 lives and trapping thousands of residents in inundated houses. Rescue teams are overstretched, with many residents trapped on roofs and in trees for more than 24 hours.

Since early this week, Myanmar has seen heavy rains and flash floods triggered by Typhoon Yagi that made landfall in Vietnam. In Naypyitaw, more than 50 villages were hit by severe flooding after water came down from mountains and dams overflowed on Wednesday and Thursday, according to locals and volunteers.

Myanmar Fire Services Dept (MFSD) on Thursday said at least 19 people died in floods in Naypyitaw, but other rescuers said the number may be higher. 10 others were reported.

TAUNGOO, Myanmar: Myanmar's junta chief made a rare request on Saturday (Sep 14) for foreign aid to cope with deadly floods that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people who have already endured three years of war.

Floods and landslides have killed almost 300 people in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand in the wake of Typhoon Yagi, which dumped a colossal deluge of rain when it hit the region last weekend.

Storm, flooding death toll in Myanmar jumps to 74
BANGKOK: The death toll in Myanmar in the wake of Typhoon Yagi has jumped to 74, state media reported on Sunday (Sep 15), a day after its junta made a rare request for foreign aid. Floods and landslides have killed almost 350 people in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand in the wake of Typhoon Yagi, which hit the region last weekend, according to official figures.

In Myanmar, the floods "resulted in 74 deaths and 89 people missing" as of Friday evening, the Global New Light of Myanmar said. Search and rescue operations were ongoing, it said, adding that the floods had destroyed more than 65,000 houses and five dams, heaping further misery on the country where war has raged since the military's 2021 coup. The junta's previous death toll was 33, more than 235,000 people displaced, according to figures released Friday.

Swathes of farmland have been inundated in central regions, including around the sprawling, low-lying capital Naypyidaw. There been reports of landslides in hilly areas, with roads, bridges damaged, phone & internet lines down, compiling information has been difficult.

The Sittaung and Bago rivers, which flow through central and southern Myanmar, were both still above dangerous levels on Sunday, state media said, athough water levels were expected to fall in the coming days. Authorities in Myanmar had opened 82 "relief camps" to house displaced people, according to state media. Thailand's weather office warned Sunday of further heavy rain in provinces along the Mekong river.

That’s why I mentioned earlier that foreign aid shd not go to Myanmar becos citizens are deprived of it.  Military junta are a corrupted bunch. They are the first to get the aid, not the citizens.

Myanmar distributes donated rice to flood-hit areas; many people without food due to heavy flooding. YANGON (Xinhua): A total of 1,002.71 tons of reserved rice was being distributed through the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve program to flood-affected areas in Myanmar, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation on Monday.

A total of 250 tons of reserved rice was allocated to Yangon region, 250 tons to Bago region and 250 tons to Ayeyarwady region, while 252.71 tons of rice was allocated to Mandalay region, U Hla Tun, deputy permanent secretary of the ministry, told Xinhua. Myanmar anti-coup forces target Mandalay in struggle to oust military. Trained and guided by ethnic armed groups, Myanmar’s volunteer fighting forces are challenging the generals’ grip.
Myanmar’s 2nd-biggest city is beginning to feel like a city under siege, while armed groups might be at the gates of Mandalay, most residents do not consider them as their enemy.

“I’ve lived in Singu since I was born and we’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Tun, a 47-year-old resident of a small town in the Mandalay region, roughly 80km (50 miles) north of the city. He asked to be identified by only part of his name for security reasons.

Most residents didn’t flee the town be'cos we had no experience with war. When fighting got more intense near town, we understood we couldn’t stay here.” Myanmar’s borderlands, home to many of country’s ethnic minorities, have been ravaged by conflict for decades, mostly Bamar areas in the heart of the country had not seen conflict since World War II. That all changed when military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratically elected govt in 2021, plunging the country into a political crisis & civil war. Since then Myanmar military has suffered stunning defeats.

Myanmar Flood Death Toll Climbs to 419:
YANGON—The death toll in Myanmar in the wake of flooding and landslides sparked by Typhoon Yagi has climbed to 419, the junta said on Tuesday. Yagi swept across northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar this month, triggering floods and landslides that have killed hundreds of people across the region.

The floods have heaped more misery on a country where millions were already displaced by more than three years of conflict unleashed by the military’s 2021 coup. As of Tuesday 419 people had been confirmed dead, the junta’s information team said in a statement.

Previous death toll reported was 384 dead and 89 missing. Tuesday’s update did not mention how many were still missing. Poor communication, particularly with remote areas, has also meant info about casualties has been slow to come out.
UN has warned that as many as 887,000 people have been affected in Myanmar in the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi. Severe flooding hit country in 2011 & 2015, with more than 100 deaths reported on both occasions, in 2008 Cyclone Nargis left more than 138,000 people dead or missing.
