The ministry is also working to increase cohort sizes in the nursing schools at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), polytechnics and universities, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said at the 2024 Nurses’ Merit Award ceremony on July 12.

It cannot be a big jump, but it should be an addition that helps fulfil the wishes of our students who want to become nurses. Even so, it will continue to be an attractive and competitive course of study,” he said.

Mr Ong told healthcare professionals at the ceremony to never believe the assertion that nobody wants to join nursing.

He said about one in 25 students will end up studying nursing, and every year during application season, he and other MPs get numerous appeals from Singaporeans who want to get into nursing but could not.

Nursing is iron rice bowl. No retrenchment. Just that it's tough work. Not everybody can take it.

There are overwhelming singaporean applicants for local nursing courses but PAP cannot provide enough places for them.

PAP needs more nurses but incapable to train enough local students and resorts to import foreign nurses.

similarly PAP needs more IT professionals for the local IT industry but incapable to train enough local students and resorts to import CECA/foreigners.

If this issues continue, Singapore will forever depend on foreigners to fill up local manpower shortage and many singaporeans will become jobless.

let me share an actual case.

for past 3 years, there is a govt program TFIP to train local IT manpower for the finance industry.
yearly, there are about 4000 applicants for 400 places.

IT professionals in finance industry are 70% to 90% CECA.
Just kick out 4000 CECA out of Singapore, there will be 4000 vacancies for Singaporeans in the finance industry.

Need more nurse? Just train more locals!

Need more doctors and surgeons? Just train more locals!

Need more IT staff? Train more locals!

Need more accountants? Train more locals!

Meanwhile, primary and secondary schools shut down, and those which remain merged because there are not enough students.

You get the idea.

We have lots of babies. Sgbuffet's chewren will be doing IT.. Wendy's chewren will become doctors.. Singapore has lots of chewren growing up to provide all its manpower needs
We don't need Malaysians, Burmese, Chinese, Indians, Pinoys.

we are talking about courses which have overwhelming local applicants.

IT and nursing courses are popular and in excess of applicants.

we should train more locals for courses which are popular with locals.

for local courses which are lack of enough local applicants, PAP can import foreigners.

for local courses which are not lack of applicants, PAP should not import foreigners

Just open up more classes for nurse training. Internship in our structure hospital that needed nurse badly. Give training for the basic nurse care.
What so difficult?

The course should not be excessively challenging, as if we were training them to become doctors. Many people end up with aspirations but fail to achieve them.

Our Polytechnic's curriculum emphasizes theoretical knowledge and spans three years. However, in the field, technicians require more practical experience and problem-solving skills to address real-world challenges.

in 2024, the govt recruited 4000 foreign nurses.

if the govt can train 4000 local nurses, the govt cannot import 4000 foreign nurses anymore.

if the govt cannot import 4000 foreign nurses, the govt cannot increase the population to 6 millions.

The nursing profession is an essential component of our society and should not be utilized as a strategy for immigration policy.
This approach misplaces priorities and fails to address the core issues at hand.
