Principle means ideally what you want to have. For example, every viable group of people have the liberty to evolve their own system of govt.
Policy is what you have to support when the ideal cannot be achieved due to practical constraints.
For me I support Taiwan having its own govt. They have done well and can function on its on. That's what the people Taiwan want also. They have build up the nation from almost nothing to an economic powerhouse.
If Taiwan were to go back to China it has to be voluntary. The people of Taiwan have be willing to go back to China.
The way for China to win back the people of Taiwan is to have a better form of governance and process well.
If not it makes no sense to force a group of people to be under a govt they do not want. This can only be done through repression. You forcibly take a group.of people and repress them will not result in a good outcome for both sides.
