Authorities became suspicious of more than 110 passengers from Chennai, Trichy, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram on the said flight. So, they were all taken to a separate room and tested.
Strip searches were conducted and pilgrims’ belongings were searched vigorously.
According to media reports, the raid which started at 8 am lasted till evening and at the end of it 60 people were found to be in possession of smuggled gold.
Those caught told the authorities that before the flight took off from Muscat, some people approached them and offered them sweets, perfumes, along with gold and iPhones.
People smuggling gold from some countries to Chennai and Trichy often get caught in customs checks.
However, this is said to be the first time that so many people have been caught on a single flight.
