Hamas proposes 3-stage ceasefire over 135 days, leading to end of war

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel on Saturday carried out its largest hostage rescue operation since the latest war with Hamas began, taking four to safety out of central Gaza in a heavy air and ground assault. At least 210 Palestinians, including children, were killed, a Gaza health official said.

Israelis were jubilant as the army said it freed Noa Argamani, 26; Almog Meir Jan, 22; Andrey Kozlov, 27; and Shlomi Ziv, 41, in a daytime operation in the heart of Nuseirat, raiding two locations at once while under fire. All were well, the military said. They were taken by helicopter for medical checks and tearful reunions with loved ones after 246 days held.

Argamani had been one of the most widely recognized hostages after being taken, like the three others, from a music festival. The video of her abduction showed her seated between two men on a motorcycle as she screamed, “Don’t kill me!”

Her mother, Liora, has brain cancer and had released a video pleading to see her daughter. Israel's Channel 13 said Argamani was moved to the hospital where her mother is treated. In a message released by the government, Argamani told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu she was “very excited,” saying she hadn’t heard Hebrew in so long.

Netanyahu in a statement vowed to continue the fighting until all hostages are freed. The operation was “daring in nature, planned brilliantly, and executed in an extraordinary fashion,” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said.

Israeli aircraft hummed overhead as the bodies of 109 Palestinians including 23 children and 11 women were taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where spokesperson Khalil Degran told The Associated Press more than 100 wounded also arrived. He said that overall, 210 dead had been taken there and to Al-Awda Hospital, saying he had spoken to the director there. Al-Awda's numbers couldn't immediately be confirmed.

Ceasefire talks in turmoil as Hamas responds to proposal. Talks to bring about a ceasefire and hostage deal that could stop the war in Gaza were thrown into doubt Tuesday evening when Israel characterized a Hamas response to the latest proposal as a rejection, precipitating a blame game between the two sides.

Hamas had submitted its response to Qatari mediators, proposing amendments to the Israeli proposal, including a timeline for a permanent ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, a source with knowledge of the talks told CNN earlier on Tuesday.

Talks are expected continue via the Qatari and Egyptian mediators in coordination with the United States to see if an agreement can be reached, the source added.

After submitting its response Tuesday, Hamas spokesman, political bureau member Osama Hamdan told Lebanon-based TV Al Mayadeen, group was committed to achieving a ceasefire. “Response is clear reaffirmation of our commitment to ceasefire & withdrawal from Gaza?, a commitment we have consistently upheld,” Hamdan added.

But a potential sign of how Israel views the proposed amendments, one Israeli official speaking to CNN analyst described Hamas’ response to original deal as a rejection. The
“Israel received Hamas’ response & Hamas rejected the proposal for a hostage deal, which was laid out by President Biden in his speech,” source said according to Ravid’s post on X.

Hamas leadership quickly pushed back on the claim as an attempt to back out of the proposal.
“The response of Hamas & Palestinian factions to the truce proposal was responsible, serious & positive. The response is consistent with the demands of our people, the resistance opens the way to reaching an agreement,” said Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the Hamas political bureau, late on Tuesday.

“The Israeli media’s incitement to Hamas’s response is an indication of attempts to evade the agreement’s obligations,” tensions surfacing at a sensitive moment. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently on diplomatic swing through region trying to secure agreement plan first unveiled by President Biden 11-days ago.
Plan, drafted by Israel, has made public in full. Endorsed by UN Security Council Monday, plan envisages a 6-wks ceasefire which Hamas would release hostages & Israel also release Palestinian prisoners that would evolve into a permanent cessation of hostilities through negotiations.

The White House has been at pains to stress it is an Israeli plan and have repeatedly said that Israel has accepted it, despite objections from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mixed signals in Israel.
Earlier Tuesday, Israel had made its clearest signal yet that it was poised to formally sign up to the plan - though in the same short statement it suggested it intended to maintain the freedom to keep fighting... Undecided

Continue from above.....The short Israeli communication, attributed to an Israeli govt official, widely understood to mean PM’s Office, started with assertion of Israel’s war aims b4 expressing support for US-backed proposal currently on the table.“Israel will not end war b4 achieving all its war objectives: destroying Hamas’s military & governing capabilities, freeing all hostages, ensuring Gaza doesn’t pose a threat to Israel in the future,” it said.

Hamas gambled on suffering of civilians in Gaza. play into PM played (right into it). “The proposal presented enables Israel to achieve these goals & Israel will indeed do so,” statement concluded. PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s oft-repeated promise of total victory & elimination of Hamas did not get a mention. The Israeli leader is caught between voices of many in his country, who believe a ceasefire deal is best way to secure release of about 120 hostages still held by Hamas, those of his extreme right coalition partners are adamant they want the war to continue.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Miniter Itamar Ben Gvir have both threatened to collapse the govt if Israel PM agrees to the deal in its current form. By contrast, senior opposition figures, a one-time war cabinet member Benny Gantz, & opposition leader Yair Lapid have been among those urging Netanyahu to embrace the US-backed plan.

Hamas is under pressure to get on board with US-backed proposal, last week its concerned Israel might not go through with  2nd phase of the plan, a permanent end to fighting. “Unless there's a clear position [⁶from Israel?] to prepare for a permanent ceasefire & a total withdrawal from Gaza Strip and open door wide to completing agreement. We cannot come to an agreement,” Hamas spokesman and political bureau member Osama Hamdan warned last week.

Eight Israeli soldiers killed in Rafah operation, IDF says. were killed in a blast in southern Gaza on Saturday, Israel’s military said, the deadliest incident for the army in the war since January.

The soldiers were in an armoured vehicle that was hit by a major explosion that, according to a preliminary investigation, detonated explosive “engineering material”, the army said.

Incident happened during an operation in the Tal al-Sultan neighbourhood of Rafah, which has been a key target for Israeli forces in recent weeks.

Earlier, the armed wing of Hamas said it had fired a rocket towards an armoured vehicle after setting up an ambush.

Israel is up against a regional superpower, Iran, that has managed to put Israel into a vice grip, using its allies and proxies: Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and Shiite militias in Iraq. Right now, Israel has no military or diplomatic answer. Worse, it faces the prospect of a war on three fronts — Gaza, Lebanon and the West Bank — but with a dangerous new twist: Hezbollah in Lebanon, unlike Hamas, is armed with precision missiles that could destroy vast swaths of Israel’s infrastructure, from its airports to its seaports to its university campuses to its military bases to its power plants.

But Israel is led by a prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has to stay in power to avoid potentially being sent to prison on corruption charges. To do so, he sold his soul to form a government with far-right Jewish extremists who insist that Israel must fight in Gaza until it has killed every last Hamasnik — “total victory” — and who reject any partnership with the Palestinian Authority (which has accepted the Oslo peace accords) in governing a post-Hamas Gaza, because they want Israeli control over all the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, including Gaza.

The Jama’a, like Hamas, is a Sunni faction that forms part of the broader Muslim Brotherhood political network. The armed wing of Jama’a, the al-Fajr Forces, has repeatedly targeted Israel from Lebanon in the current war, often working in conjunction with the Shiite Hezbollah.

Then threatens to use it on Israel. The United States reacts with the threat of military intervention, as it did in 1991 and 2003 in Iraq. Iran signals that it will not tolerate a third Gulf war and looks for allies. American forces mass to enter Iran, which orders national mobilisation.

✓✓ Russia enters the game, raising the stakes in the expectation that the West will back down. A nuclear standoff follows, but with tense and itchy fingers on both sides, as leaders gamble on the risk of not striking first, it all ends in disaster.

✓ The Third World War begins with an exchange of nuclear fire, and the rest, as they say, is history.

US, Israel see easing of Gaza fighting as Hezbollah ‘off-ramp’ to avoid war. IDF drawdown in Strip may suffice for Lebanese terror group to end attacks that have put sides on cusp of all-out conflict, officials say, with Gaza ceasefire still elusive

WASHINGTON — The US and Israel are hoping that an imminent scaling back of intensive fighting in Gaza will provide Lebanese terror group Hezbollah with an “off-ramp” to back away from near-daily border attacks that have sent the region spiraling toward a larger conflict, two US and Israeli officials told The Times of Israel on Thursday.

The US has placed a major emphasis on keeping tensions on Israel’s northern border from snowballing into all-out war, working to broker a long-shot diplomatic deal while pinning its hopes on a ceasefire in Gaza leading to the restoration of calm between Israel and Hezbollah

US has been looking to recruit Arab allies for the initiative, as it readies to roll out its vision for the post-war management of Gaza, even though a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains elusive. During visits to Qatar, Egypt, Israel and Jordan two weeks ago, Blinken interlocutors the US has made progress on the issue, receiving support from Cairo and Abu Dhabi for creation of a force who would work alongside  Palestinian officers, according to Arab official, a US official and a third source familiar with the matter.

Egypt & UAE both stipulated conditions for their involvement, including a demand that initiative be linked to the establishment of a pathway to a future Palestinian state an outcome PM Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to block.

The 3rd source familiar with matter said Egypt is also demanding complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza — a condition likely to clash with Netanyahu’s pledge to maintain overall security control of the Strip after war, with ability to re-enter as necessary in order to prevent the revival of Hamas.

Meanwhile, the UAE demanded US involvement in post-war Gaza security force, US Secretary Blinken clarified, though, that the US would not be contributing troops of its own. Arab official said.

Blinken told counterparts, US would help establish train the security force, ensure that it would have a temporary mandate, so that it could eventually be replaced by a fully Palestinian body, the third source said, adding goal is Palestinian Authority to eventually take over Gaza. Reuniting the Strip & the West Bank under a single governing entity is seen as an integral step toward an eventual two-state solution.

Why an Israel-Hezbollah war will be far more dangerous today than the last time around,
aking apart Hezbollah’s military power in days, however, is a far taller task.

Since its inconclusive 2006 war with the Lebanese militant group, Israel has been planning for a re-match. Hezbollah too has long been preparing for war

We can try plunge Lebanon completely into the dark and try to take apart Hezbollah’s power in days,” former Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz for saying. It was just one of the latest threat from a prominent Israeli public figure against Lebanon & Hezbollah as tensions flare.

It won’t be difficult for Israel to plunge Lebanon into darkness. The country’s power grid, already crippled by decades of mismanagement & the country’s economic collapse, barely functions.

But a few well-aimed airstrikes is not so easily to  finish it off. Just like at Hamas, they can't finish their war yet and they like to start one more. This may forward yo 2029 - 2032 bigger war.
