I do not know what bouts of foolishness plagued the US Department of Defence for them to leak this information to the press. Maybe they are trying to project an image that they are the reasonable ones and China is being petty for not picking up their call?

All this does is further erode any confidence US allies have on its security commitment. Put it this way - A vassal who has continuously paid protection money for your military support is now under siege and you have two main options to respond:

1) Demonstrate to the world that your security commitments are worth their weight in gold by confronting China either through military deployment stand offs and/or the usual economic financial sanctions

2) Act blur and make a few meaningless press statements and do nothing while waiting for the media intensity to pass

Not only did the US government eventually chose #2 which is already a demonstration of weakness / incapacity, it upped the ante with an even worse option #3, i.e. make a big show of their helplessness by telling everyone they are trying to reach out to China to resolve the issue and being told indirectly to "fark off". No wonder even a hardcore ally like South Korea's President chose to go into hiding.

王毅：美方在台湾问题上犯了三方面错误

据外交部网站8月7日消息，当地时间2022年8月7日，国务委员兼外长王毅在访问孟加拉国期间，针对最新形势和美方无理狡辩，指出美方在佩洛西窜访中国台湾地区上犯了三方面错误。

一是粗暴干涉中国内政。美方不顾中方反复劝告警示，一意孤行，安排美政府三号人物到中国台湾地区进行所谓“访问”。须知，台湾不是美国的一部分，而是中国的领土，美方自己也做出过公开承诺。美方的行径，是在严重侵犯中国主权。

二是纵容支持“台独”势力。任何国家都必须维护国家统一，都不容许分裂势力肆意妄为。台湾地区执政的民进党把谋求独立写入党纲，近年来千方百计搞渐进式“台独”，制造“两个中国”和“一中一台”。美国会众议长公开为其撑腰打气，与分裂势力为伍，与中国人民为敌。

三是蓄意破坏台海和平。美国惯于先制造一个问题，再利用这个问题实现自身战略图谋。有迹象表明，美国在策划佩洛西窜访问题上又想故伎重演，正在借机加大地区军事部署，这值得各方高度警惕和坚决抵制。

王毅说，中方的坚定立场和采取的举措正当、合理、依法、必要、公开、适度，旨在维护中国的神圣主权和领土完整，遏阻美国“以台制华”的图谋，粉碎台当局“倚美谋独”的幻想，真正维护好台海的和平、地区的稳定。

王毅强调，不干涉内政原则是国与国交往的“黄金法则”，是发展中国家维护自身主权安全的“护身法宝”。我们感谢各国对中方立场的理解和支持。在单边霸凌行径不时横行的今天，国际社会应就此形成更明确的共识，发出更有力的声音，共同维护国际关系的基本准则和国际法，共同维护所有发展中国家的正当权益。
