Indonesia aims to compete with Singapore's Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport with its Kualanamu International Airport, Indonesia's Deputy Minister for State-Owned Enterprises Kartika Wirjoatmodjo said on Dec. 2, Tempo reported.

The airport, which opened in July 2013, is located in northern Sumatra.

Wirjoatmodjo said that upon completion of its upgrade, the airport will capture the share of passengers transiting from southern Asia travelling to northern Asia and Australia.

He added that Kualanamu International Airport will be Indonesia's bid to fight against Changi Airport and KLIA's dominance in the region.

......

GMR Airports had invested Rp 56 trillion (S$5.35 billion) to improve the airport's quality, as well as increase its capacity

......

With the investment, the airport's capacity is set to increase from 10 million passengers to 54 million passengers a year.

Siao. For reference, Changi's capacity is 80mil. JKT airport is 60m+. Medan airport wants to reach 56mil as a provincial city with only 3.4m population. Transit passengers will want something to do and see, but the city itself is 1 hour drive from the airport. Lake Toba is 4-5 hours away. Give free landing slots and free aircraft parking, most airlines will still not want to fly there.

The "centre of gravity" for the population of East Asia lies in Indochina so BKK or Kunming** are better choice for transit.
Flying into Medan will thus incur more fuel costs (less green too). Moreover Medan is near to many volcanoes and flights will be disrupted every time one erupts. So definitely not an ideal spot.

** Kunming is now the gateway for flower import and export into East Asia.

Going back to 2019, the last non-COVID-19 year, KLIA handled 62.3mil passengers, not far from Changi's 68.3mil. Suvarnabhumi handled 65.43mil, even closer.

Suvarnabhumi's number of international passengers is 54.46mil. Domestic is 11.97mil.

I cannot find the numbers for KLIA.

Yes, I know. I was posting for info purposes, not saying that Bangkok has more passengers. Geographically it does have an advantage over Singapore though. Singapore has to work hard to keep in front which it has by having Jewel etc.
