That’s exactly the problem I summarized 2 months ago when China’s peace plan was first announced. The script was supposed to be US vassal Zelenskyy leading the charge to condemn the peace plan as outrageous followed by US joining in to accuse China of having insidious intentions for Ukraine.
 
Instead the Ukrainian side gave a non-committal response and seemed open to explore further. This then led to a comical scenario in which the US had to jump up and “speak for Ukraine” in condemning the peace plan.
 
Now that the Xi-Zelenskyy call went through and even the messages coming out from Ukraine are fairly positive, the US is now jammed into a corner in which they have to reluctantly agree that this is a good development. Whether any deal can materialize remains to be seen, but because of Zelenskyy’s “disobedience”, US was put into a reactive mode in the war and is now being blackmailed by Ukraine for ever increasing aid.
 
Give in to the coercion and US has to commit even more resources with no end in sight and might later on be even accused of ill intentions by Europe and the rest of the world. Give up and follow along to facilitate the peace plan, then it’s pretty much an open admission that China calls the shots in Europe and that would be the de facto end of NATO.

What started out as a low cost shiit stirring adventure for quick gains has now turned into a strategic misadventure for the US. Like Obama said "Never under estimate Joe's ability to fcuk things up."
