China's Foreign Minister in Berlin: Qin Gang visits the "Teacher"
#1

In mid-April, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her Chinese counterpart Qin Gang raced through the People's Republic at a speed of 330 km/h - in the Chinese high-speed train.

That didn't mean that disagreements were settled during this top-speed visit. The relationship with the country, which is a "systemic rival" and "partner" in one, is too complicated for that.

This also and especially applies to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which Beijing is still playing down as a "crisis":

I have to say openly that I wonder why the Chinese position so far has not included a call for the aggressor Russia to stop the war,
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Qin Gang's usual frank words from the German Foreign Minister were too frank in some places, including on the subject of human rights:

What China needs least are teachers from the West, China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Wednesday visited and delivered a speech at the Potsdam Conference site in Berlin, Germany, emphasizing maintaining the post-war international order and achieving China's national unity.

Qin said that the Potsdam Conference held in 1945 played an important role in establishing the international order after the World War II and had historical significance to the Chinese people.

The Potsdam Conference had special impact on China as the Potsdam Declaration issued after the conference reaffirmed the provisions of the Cairo Declaration, that all the territories Japan had stolen, including Taiwan, shall be restored to China, Qin added.

"This is a significant achievement of the World Anti-Fascist War. It is what 35 million Chinese soldiers and civilians had fought for shedding blood and lives" he said.

Qin said that the United States had completely ignored the Potsdam Declaration it originally drafted, supporting and conniving with 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities, which undermines the post-war international order and damages China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"The post-war international order must be maintained! International fairness and justice must be upheld! Pursuing 'Taiwan independence' and splitting the country challenges international justice and order, moving against the tide of history, and it is doomed to be a dead end," said Qin. "The reunification of China must be realized!"

He also left a message on the guestbook which reiterated the maintenance on post-war order, world's peaceful development and the dedication to realize China's national reunification.

It's most unfortunate for Germany when Angela Merkel chose to retire right at the beginning of a global upheaval where her strong leadership for Germany and EU is needed more than anytime since the end of the cold war.

Instead Germany is stuck with a 3 party coalition government where the senior partner, i.e. Chancellor Scholz, seems unable to demonstrate any leadership. During his stint, about the only thing Scholz did was to compromise - compromise to the Americans, compromise to various minor EU countries stirring trouble, compromise to junior coalition partner Green Party, compromise to German business interests with regards to China, compromise to Russia etc.

His Green Party partner, led by the prominent Foreign Minister Baerbock on the other hand is a typical political neophyte who has nothing to show for except to repeat all the usual election campaign stunts such as thrash talking, symbolic gestures, slogans, press conferences etc.

On the EU front she exerted no presence or influence for German interests and EU's foreign policies were largely overshadowed by Brussel bureaucrats such as Vonderlyn and Borrell or the French. Her dealings with US were also absent with Biden and Blinken dealing directly with the Brussels team. On matters pertaining to China, all she has is the usual sloganeering for news headline purposes.

It's really a very bad combination for Germany. No wonder their economy and political influence is going downhill ever since Merkel left.
