Wars don’t happen without local stakes. Let’s not forget: Arab monarchs HAD agreed with the British plan.
The British consulted with the rulers and the rulers assented to the Balfour Declaration.
Both Arabs and Israel expelled people: Israelis expelled 650,000 Palestinians, Arabs expelled 900,000 Jews.
But only Israel absorbed their “side’s” refugees. Arabs states did not.
They have continuously pressed Palestinians’ “right of return” while hypocritically refusing the same right to the Jews they expelled, not even allowing those refugees and their descendants the ability to visit.
And, even though the UN partitioned the land into two, giving a 50-50 split to Israelis and Palestinians,
it was the Arabs who invaded Israel on day 2 of its existence. When Israel won the 1948 war, it actually handed over the Gaza Strip and West Bank to Egypt and Jordan respectively - Israel did not hold on to either territory. Yet, repeatedly over the next decades, Arab states tried to invade Israel and cause trouble just to destroy them.
Which other countries after WW2 behaved this way - expelling people, then trying to destroy the country that received these people? India and Pakistan expelled Muslims/Hindus, but respected each side’s right to exist. Ditto Turkey with Greeks and Greece, and Armenians with Armenia. Poland and Germany swapped massive numbers of people - no issue with each other’s existence.
During all this time, the Arab states could’ve been helping Palestinians and focusing on building a Palestinian state, instead of just focusing on destroying Israel.
Or they could’ve helped to move on and adjust to their new reality, like millions of other refugees around the world, including their Jewish counterparts. Instead they fomented decades of violence.
All of this had nothing to do with the British or USA. Islamic states have their own agendas.
Even Palestinians’ own leaders screwed them over. The Palestinians were offered statehood multiple times - but each time, until Oslo, “Yasser Arafat said no”. He refused all offers of Palestinian statehood because he would not accept one condition: acceptance of Israel’s existence.
Ditto Hamas - Israel actually pulled out completely in 2006. Since then Hamas has launched 4 wars.
Hamas, like the PLO before and Arab states until Yom Kippur War, has been more interested in destroying Israel than building a Palestinian future. That’s why have they terrorist tunnels but not bomb shelters.
Why they are happy to get free utilities from Israel instead of developing their own infrastructure.
Why they steal water pipes and turn them into projectile weapons.
Why they steal aid from civilians.
And why they turn hospitals and schools into legit military targets by basing military activities there.
Let’s not fall into the same thinking as Arab states - it’s Britain’s fault!, America’s fault!, Israel’s fault! - but never taking a good hard look at their own behavior and what they’ve done to create this situation.
