He is an elite lah. When he hangs around fellow SG elites, they usually speak good English and reasonably good mother tongue. Unless they are Pioneer generation like NKS.

That is why he move here.

Language is a tool , more the merrier
but no need to be good
because in reality very few jobs require us to write essay or literature.
Indeer england also half past six as us, but people say they are superpower  Big Grin

england isn't a country and certainly not a "superpower"

It is part of a 2nd-rated disunited island kingdom which today is far removed from an era when pple tell you to make a living must speak "Good English" Big Grin

Look at China , Shanghai and Beijing those people. Their spoken English , is really standard. Partly a lot American english teachers at China open language classes.

Actually he was - LKY had suggested to DengXiaoping to include england-language in China's educations.
Good thing is  other than learning most of SG's development, ignore the British-educated SGrean idea.
Don't know whom you mix with, today in Shanghai in other major cities, they see those england-speaking Asians as Bananas..

There is no doubt english is the most useful language today
but there are other factors to Sg success
It helps but not deciding factor, we can see many english speaking
African countries still in poverty since their independence.
The rich are still the same few after war really.

Also as port hub Sg must avoid monolingual to survive, we must guard ourselves
some Ziren and foreign elements brain wash to erode our competitiveness.
Multilingual skills are much important than specialize well in one language.
Anyway Sg english not bad what, it normal to embed with some local contents.
