Korea’s dilemma: US-led chip alliance or Chinese market?
27-07-2022, 07:33 PM
China accounts for 40 percent of imports and exports in Korea’s semiconductor industry — which rises to 60 percent if Hong Kong is included. Korea’s semiconductor trade with China was worth US$76 billion last year, more than triple what it was a decade ago.

Considering that the so-called “Chip 4” alliance would be aimed at excluding China, which has become the biggest export market for Korean semiconductors, as well as a major production base for Korean chipmakers, there are concerns that joining the alliance could shake up the ecosystem of the Korean semiconductor industry.

This long article somehow manages to miss the most important part of the story, I'm not sure it's because the reporter doesn't know or perhaps nobody high up in Korea dares to say it out loud for fear of offending the Biden administration.
Besides losing the Chinese market, the super major problem is the very act of Samsung's existence conflicts with the US national security strategy especially with regards to chip manufacturing. The US government has already explicitly made it a strategic goal to bring high end chip making capabilities back to US, the Chips Act is but the start of the plan.
The problem for Korea is once they join this alliance, they will lose the Chinese market immediately for the short term and then lose the US market as well in the mid term as US manufacturers eventually gobble up market share from Samsung et. al. Over the mid to longer term, China and US will leverage on their geopolitical and economic clout to support their national champions (SMIC, Intel etc.) to gain market share globally and pretty much relegate Korean and Taiwanese chip firms to fringe players.
That is the REAL problem, it's not just about losing China market share. If there is one single thing that both China and US can agree on now is both intend to wipe out the likes of TSMC and Samsung on national security grounds.

韩国新总统果断宣布:与中国经济脱钩!
韩国“脱钩”中国,给亚洲其他小国做了一个表率
as above, new president want to cut off tie totally with china!
korea IC sell to china, mainly memory NAND IC, china has no technology to make.
also high end & advanced IC, china cant get from TSMC!
If korea cut all these out, memory can only get from micron US, micron already move their factory & office out of china!

I think so.
The worst and most stupid comments are by Alam Kok.
When SMIC already made 7 nm chips, then, he said his flg latest news is US will pass law to ban 14 nm chips for China.
I asked him, when China already made 7 nm chips, who f care about US would ban 14 or 28 nm chips? Really brain dead.
