If you want me to hazard a guess, my take is the Singapore government has more or less reached a conclusion that over the long term China will be the #1 and ASEAN as a group is already manuvering to complement with this development of the new world order.

While personally he probably is much more oriented to the West, his personal preference are at this point irrelevant and the key thing is to strive for the best for Singapore under a new China soft-led world order. The most likely path is to continue proclamations of neutrality while slowly pivoting in reality to China.

However during this pivoting phase, we must strengthen our bargaining position by constantly invoking our great historical friendship with US and emphasize rhetorically that we do not believe that the US is in decline and advocate that there is much US can contribute to ASEAN.

During this stage of ambiguity, it is paramount that the government has maximum flexibility to position itself and not be steered in the wrong direction by the masses who are mostly reacting from an emotional angle instead of geopolitical realities.

Too much pro-China propaganda, the government will be forced to be overly friendly to China which ironically weakens our position in front of China and within ASEAN. Too much pro-US nonsense, the government could be forced to go down a disastrous path of siding with the US which it knows is not where the future is.

Bias reporting by Western medias.
The most laughable one is when AP reported, Russia foreign minister had heart attack at G20, Indonesia. Then he appeared well.
Another is all the news on Putin.
How his hand shaked. Can't stand steady.. Blah blah..?
So stupid to believe them.

This is called tactical balancing.

If poke CCP only, CCP will retort and say why pick on CCP only. So purposely bring up Western side of things also, prevent CCP from saying we take sides.

But we all know which side’s propaganda irritates Singapore more: CCP’s.

Hence LHL speech still focus on CCP propaganda more. Why else would Wumaos still scold him?

LHL is was definitely in the pocket of the Americans given his university educations are in the US and attended US Army Command and General Staff College... And this itself become his major handicap on the politcal leadership front - We can see this in an apparent lack of awareness of Asian geopolitics when he insisted in visiting TW months before he became PM in 2004, regardless of Chinese position.

Today, almost 20 years later, the out-going PM somehow got schooled by the reality that China is no sleeping Panda anymore..

You cannot ignore the Rise of Asia.

China has done a good job to attract Russia into our continent. This means that Russia won’t be a threat to Asia.

Indeed 2016-2017 was the pinnacle moment when Singapore adopted the most aggressive pro-US anti-China stance by attempting to rally the rest of ASEAN to slug it out with China.

Thereafter I believe the Singapore government got schooled in realities on three fronts:

1) Because of the South China sea incident, China’s influence in ASEAN was laid bare for all to see, i.e. it was at that time at least comparable to that of the US. LHL  with US support could only muster Vietnam and Philippines in ASEAN even at the greatest extent of their influence. Indonesia though unhappy with China, made it clear she was not joining a US led containment initiative.

As time passed, more and more countries became impatient with LHL’s attempt to invite US influence into ASEAN and to make matters for him worse, Duterte got elected and subsequently Philippines abandoned the “arbitration ruling” in pursuit of better Sino-Philippines relationship. Sensing that all was lost, Vietnam suddenly did an about turn and betrayed the cause by cozing up with China with all the “brother comrade” talk.

This became the last straw that bankrupted Singapore’s attempt to lead ASEAN through US. In the end because of LHL’s misadventure, Singapore was left in a ridiculous position of having no territorial dispute with China and yet trying to convince everyone to have a territorial dispute with China.

2) The increasing polarized and isolationist tendency of US politics ultimately led to the election of Trump. Trump became openly hostile to any relationship which US could not secure immediate gains and generally turned hostile to most Asian nations. His protectionist policies were also fundamentally at odds with the livelihood of a trading nation like Singapore.

During the 4 years of Trump, some of the pro-US western Singapore elites were still holding to a delusionary belief that Trump was simply an aberration and all would be fixed once he got replaced by someone else. Then came Biden who other than being less vulgar and coarse than Trump, doubled down on almost all of Trump’s foreign and economic policies.

3) China started to slowly squeeze Singapore balls. Many investment and trade activities were curtailed including the BRI non-invitation you mentioned, some of the pro-China ASEAN nations started to stir shiit against Singapore and of course our interaction with Taiwan got placed under the microscope which cumulated in the Terrex incident.

With a US administration that couldn’t care less about Singapore other than to coerce a few small bucks, an ASEAN community which has largely turned cooperative with China, Singapore was left alone to deal with an angry panda. Thankfully it was not in the strategic interest of China to whack Singapore other than a gentle ball squeeze.

Fortunately the Singapore government remains a highly practical one and we promptly did a 180 degree turn once educated on geopolitical realities. LHL has since been adopting the right path of leveraging on whatever that is left of US political capital to extract maximum concessions while de facto pivoting to China and officially proclaiming neutrality. This is a sensible policy.

As citizens what we need to do is not to try and force the government into the open to support China or US. The former weakens us unnecessarily while the latter is disastrous over the longer term.

Yep, LHL is not very politically mature in the sense that he sometimes seem to react very emotionally solely based on his personal preference. We can see the same behavioural pattern in not just Sino-US issue, but also in other domestic policy areas and even right down to his personal dispute with his sister and brother.

Good thing is at least he is not obstinate beyond redemption and will still eat humble pie and suck it up when he needs to. Whether he did it willingly isn't important, fact is he corrected his mistakes and has since been acting right on this issue.

We can only hope he doesn't do something silly again in the future.

The Tongue White House notified the Kremlin of Joe Biden’s intention to visit Kyiv hours before he departed for Ukraine, it has been revealed, as Tongue the details began to emerge of how the US president pulled off his high-profile diplomatic coup.

Meticulously planned over several months by a tight circle of key advisers, Biden’s visit was described as “unprecedented in modern times” by his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, on the grounds that it was the first time a US president had visited “the capital of the country at war where the United States military does not control the critical infrastructure”.

“We did notify the Russians that President Biden will be travelling to Kyiv,” Sullivan said. “We did so some hours before his departure for deconfliction purposes, and because of the sensitive nature of those communications I won’t get into how they responded or what the precise nature of our message was, but I can confirm that we provided that notice.”

The US informed Moscow to avoid any misunderstanding or misjudgment between the two nuclear-armed powers, according to accounts from Washington.

Biden crossed into Ukraine at about 10pm on Sunday night, having quietly boarded a train in the Polish town of Przemyśl. His motorcade pulled up alongside his carriage allowing him to board unseen. His security detail took up most of the train’s eight carriages.

According to a pool reporter on board, the journey through the night was uneventful with a few stops, at least one of which was to take on additional security guards. The train arrived at Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi station at 8am on Monday.

The US president, Joe Biden, walks along the train platform in Kyiv on his visit to see his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Biden took the final decision to go on Friday after huddling with his top aides in the Oval Office. Much of the trip until the final train ride had been shrouded in subterfuge.

The journalist and photographer accompanying the president were sworn to secrecy and notified of the rendezvous arrangements under the title: “Arrival instructions for the golf tourney.” Prior to departure they had to hand over their phones, which were not returned until arrival in Kyiv.

Eschewing the presidential Air Force One jet, Biden boarded an Air Force C-32, a modified Boeing 757 normally used for domestic trips to smaller airports with the call sign SAM060, for Special Air Mission. Prior to departure, the plane sat in a dark corner of Andrews airbase with its shades down, and it took off shortly after 4am on Sunday morning.

Refuelling at Ramstein in Germany, Biden’s plane turned off its transponder for the roughly hour-long flight to Rzeszów, Poland, an airport that has served as the gateway for billions of dollars in western arms and VIP visitors into Ukraine. From Rzeszów, the president and his entourage were taken by motorcade on the hour’s drive to the train station at Przemyśl.

Other foreign leaders who have come to Ukraine, including the former British prime minister Boris Johnson and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, have also come in by train from Poland – a route used by journalists, aid workers and diplomats, with Ukraine’s civilian airspace closed for the past year.

Biden was met by the US ambassador to Kyiv, Bridget Brink, and taken in a convoy of vehicles which sped through closed-off roads to his meeting with Zelenskiy, using armoured vehicles that appeared to have been brought in discreetly in advance.

US presidents visiting war zones is not unheard of: three visited Iraq, including Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, in what were seen at the time as major security operations. Barack Obama, Trump and George W Bush also visited Afghanistan.

But compared with Kabul and the US Bagram airbase, which hosted visits, Ukraine was viewed as a very different proposition.

That, White House officials are saying, is the distinction between this trip and previous presidential visits to Afghanistan and Iraq. In those countries, there was a massive US military presence, but there is none in Ukraine, and a minimal diplomatic presence.

Active war zone is surveilled by Moscow’s electronic warfare aircraft, with Ukrainian society penetrated by Russian agents.

Risks were apparent from the outset and planned for over “a period of months” by a handful of Biden’s closest aides with input from the NSC, the White House’s military office, the Pentagon, state department, and the intelligence community.
