Police investigate PAS president’s Batu Puteh statement over fears of public unrest

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 — The police are investigating PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang over his alleged statement regarding the Batu Puteh issue, which could potentially cause public unrest.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the investigation was initiated following a report lodged on Monday about the statement posted on Abdul Hadi’s X account.

“A detailed investigation is underway, and the case is being probed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he told Bernama.

We, members of G25, wish to express our strong opposition to decision of the Terengganu Sharia Appeal Court uphold the Sharia High Court’s sentence of public whipping for offence of khalwat (close proximity) by 42-year-old Affendi Awang, a widower & father of five.

The rationale behind sentence reportedly to deter both offender & others from act of khalwat, as offender himself is a repeat offender.

We in G25 respectfully appeal to federal govt & the Conference of Rulers to take the progressive stand that it's wrong for state govts, through their respective state Sharia enactments, to criminalise moral sins of Muslims & to mete out cruel forms of punishment against them.

The criminalisation of their personal behaviour violates human rights and the fundamental liberties guaranteed under the Federal Constitution.

We respectfully urge relevant authorities to put a stop to the whipping which is now scheduled for 27 December.
