Best Buy hit by Black Friday shoplifting blitz; CEO says crime could drive workers out

Crowds of thieves struck at Best Buy stores in the Twin Cities on Friday, just days after the retailer's CEO warned that increased crime around the country could scare away employees.

Minnesota Public Radio has a report on the thefts, which occurred Friday night at Best Buy stores in Burnsville and Maplewood. The Burnsville case reportedly involved 20 to 30 people, while about a dozen adults and juveniles struck the Maplewood store. Maplewood police said that the thieves apparently worked in concert, targeting high-value items like televisions and hoverboards.

No one was injured or arrested; the suspects were gone by the time police arrived.

UK government eyes harsher sentences and new criminal offences for those who glue or lock themselves to roads or structures

Bill represents a bid to revive measures which were previously put forward under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill

Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion has announced plans to bring “millions of people on to the streets” after the British government launched a fresh bid to crack down on disruptive “guerilla protests”.

The climate change protest group said it is “foolish” for ministers to think announcing new “curbs” will stop people “taking to the streets to demand their Government act to ensure a safe future for people in the UK and around the world”, as it set out its intention for action from September 10.

It comes after the Public Order Bill was unveiled as part of the Queen’s Speech on Tuesday, with harsher sentences and new criminal offences for those involved in some types of protest.

The Public Order Bill seeks to outlaw tactics in England and Wales such as protesters “locking on” to public transport infrastructure or gluing themselves to roads, which have been adopted by campaign groups such as Insulate Britain.

Police fire on Dutch farmers protesting environmental rules

Farmers have blocked supermarkets, distributions centers and roads in response to government plans to cut nitrogen emissions.

Dutch police fired shots at tractor-riding farmers who were protesting against plans to cut nitrogen emissions on Tuesday evening in northern Netherlands.

Police said they were responding to a "threatening situation" when the farmers, who were attempting to push past a blockade to get onto a highway in the province of Friesland, started to drive their tractors into officers and their vehicles.

According to the Friesland police, their shots hit a tractor, but no one was injured. Three suspects were arrested. The Rijksrecherche, the Dutch government's internal investigator, said it would look into the events given police had discharged their weapons.

South Korea’s Yoon Says DSME Shipyard Strike Causing ‘Tremendous Damage’ to Nation’s Shipbuilding

SEOUL, July 19 (Reuters) – A strike by contract workers at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is unacceptable, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Tuesday, raising the prospect that his government could use force to break it up.

Yoon’s remarks come amid rising tension at the company’s shipyard near the south coast city of Geoje, where about 100 sub-contractors launched the strike last month, occupying the shipyard’s main dock, to demand a pay rise of 30%.

“The public no longer tolerates anyone resorting to illegal and threatening actions,” Yoon, who is facing a second major industrial action since taking power in May, told a cabinet meeting.

The government had “waited long enough,” he said earlier.

The strike was causing “tremendous damage” to the shipbuilding industry at a critical time on its path to recovery, as well as to the wider economy, Yoon added.

It was not immediately clear what action he planned against the striking workers, however.

South Korea’s third-biggest shipbuilder has said the dispute cost it more than $400 million by mid-July and was likely to lead to delivery delays.

The workers’ demands aim to make up for cuts in recent years, when shipbuilders struggled to survive a global slump in the shipping industry. Since then orders have gradually recovered, thanks to pent-up demand from the pandemic.

They want the right to directly negotiate with company management, rather than subcontracting firms, for fairer wages as the cost of living soars amid record-high inflation.

About 76,000 sub-contract shipyard workers were laid off between 2015 and 2020, they said in a statement.
