Tesla Supplier CATL's Qilin Battery Will Have 641 Miles or Range: Big for Tesla I have big news about an electric vehicle, which is powered by a battery from a major Tesla battery supplier CATL, and which will have 641 miles of range on a single charge with this battery. Does this mean, this same battery may be supplied to Tesla too and soon we will see longer ranges with future Teslas? I mean the range of future electric vehicles will be prolonged, considering the development of technology, but is this the time that new electric vehicles move beyond 250-400 miles of range? Also, this company is coming to the United States and seeking an IPO in the near future in the United States automotive market.

So Geely's electric vehicle brand Zeekr's Zeekr 001 with CATL Qilin Battery will have a range of 1,032 kilometers, the latest regulatory documents imply. CATL is a major battery supplier for many Tesla vehicles, especially in Giga Shanghai.

On June 23, CATL unveiled their Qilin Battery, or CTP 3.0 battery, which brings a new level of battery system integration. It is designed to allow a 72% volume utilization and 255Wh/kg energy density, allowing vehicles to have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. This new battery pack structure is not related to battery chemistry, and can be used for both ternary batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries.

The Japanese were one of the frontrunner in battery tech decades ago with their top selling hybrid Toyota Prius. Perhaps their early successes (mis)lead them to complacency ?  Now Jap car makers finally wake up to a brave New World, but maybe too late liao.

Hina launches sodium-ion battery tests in vehicles

In China, sodium-ion batteries are being used on a limited test basis in an electric car for the first time. The relatively unknown battery manufacturer Hina Battery presented three sodium-ion battery cell types and announced a partnership with the car company JAC.

Hina Battery and Sehol, a joint venture between JAC and Volkswagen Anhui, have jointly built a sodium-ion battery test vehicle based on the Sehol EX10 small electric car. The test vehicle has a battery pack with a capacity of 25 kWh and an energy density of 120 Wh/kg. The model has a range of 252 km according to Chinese standards and supports fast charging up to 4C. The battery pack uses sodium-ion cells with an energy density of 140 Wh/kg.

Hina Battery was founded in 2017 and launched its first sodium-ion battery in the same year. At the end of 2022, Hina Battery started its first GWh-scale sodium-ion battery production line.

Sodium-ion batteries are starting to gain popularity. BYD Seagull is not the first car to feature this new technology. That title goes to Sehol EX10 made by VW's joint venture with JAC. The car comes with a 25 kWh battery pack with an energy density of 120 Wh/kg and has a 252 km range.

While sodium-ion batteries are cheaper to manufacture and are less affected by cold temperatures, there are still plenty of kinks that need ironing out. For now, their charging rate is slower and they have lower energy density. They are here to stay though, and this is only the first generation of them.
