Najib’s bid for house arrest rattles Malaysian govt, but is seen as unlikely to topple PM Anwar.

S'PORE – A bid for house arrest by jailed former M'sian premier Najib Razak rattled the admin of PM Anwar Ibrahim, as his opponents, the Umno faction in his multi-coalition govt are taking positions to benefit from huge controversy.
The issue has thrown up questions of whether the govt has been “hiding” a note from former M'sian king decreed Najib should serve remainder of his prison sentence at home, opposition is agitating for Datuk Seri Anwar to step down for mishandling the matter. In a panel discussion organised by the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore on Jan 9, politicians from both sides of the political divide gave differing views on the controversy.

Lawmaker from Mr Anwar’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition believes opposition has lost its “last chance” of toppling administration by using Najib house-arrest issue. This last chance is the rally attended by thousands of people on Jan 6 outside Appeals Court in Putrajaya where Najib’s case was being heard. “I think Jan 6 was probably last possible venue for opposition to grab power, thank God it’s done,” Selangor PH lawmaker Wong Chen told the panel discussion titled “M'sia  Madani at Mid-Term: Closing Window Reform?”, part of ISEAS’s annual Regional Outlook Forum in Singapore. Mr Anwar dubs his administration Unity govt, or Madani govt, promoting it as a responsive inclusive administration.

The question, can Unity govt survive a full term? The answer is yes, if it (economy) continues to grow,” Mr Wong said, adding that M'sians are tired of ongoing political conflicts over past few years. Country’s next general election (GE) must be held by February 2028.
