Russia says it will strike British targets if UK weapons are used to hit its territory (hootha)

MOSCOW – Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on May 23 Moscow would retaliate with strikes on British targets if British weapons are used by Ukraine to strike Russian territory.

Ms Zakharova told reporters British targets “on Ukraine’s territory and beyond its borders” could be hit in such a scenario. She was repeating a warning that Moscow first issued earlier in May after British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Ukraine has a right to use weapons provided by London to hit targets inside Russia.

Russia reacted with outrage to that remark, cited it as one of the reasons why it has opted to hold exercises in May to simulate the launch of tactical nuclear missiles. REUTERS

"Right now, these days, we are defending ourselves 60 kilometers northeast from this place from yet another attempt of the Russian assault," Zelensky said in the address recorded at the Kharkiv printing house destroyed in a Russian May 23 strike that killed seven people.

"Russia is preparing for offensive actions also 90 kilometers northwest from here – they gather another group of troops near our border... The one who does all this doesn't want peace."

"Russia offensive actions is 90 k/m northwest,

The one who does all this doesn't want peace, latest offensive into Kharkiv Oblast is stretching Ukrainian defenses. Zelensky emphasized the scale of Russia's daily air attacks against Kharkiv, "More than a million people in this city & everynight & everyday, Russian army is shelling mostly with S-300 missiles. These are air defense missiles that Russia employs to terrorize the folks. There is not a single district or street in Kharkiv that hasn't suffered from this regular cruelty," the president said. He called world leaders to participate in Ukraine's upcoming peace summit to be held on June 15-16 in Switzerland. He particularly appealed to U.S. President Joe Biden who according to reports is likely to miss event & Chinese Xi Jinping, whose country's participance is still in question.

"Please, show your leadership in advancing the peace – the real peace and not just a pause between the strikes. The efforts of the global majority are the best guarantee that all commitments will be fulfilled," said Zelensky.

While Russia has not been invited to the summit, Ukraine's Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak said that China's attendance would be very important and that Ukraine is making every effort to engage Chinese delegates in participating in the event.

Summit will be centered around Ukraine's 10-point peace formula, a plan first outlined by Zelensky in fall 2022 that calls for a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied Ukrainian lands. According to Zelensky, over 80 countries have confirmed their participation in the global peace summit, including India.

As Russian losses in Ukraine hit 500,000, Putin buries future demographic risks at home. About
half a mil Russian soldiers were either killed or wounded during 27-mth-long full-scale war. The staggering number is in line with estimates U.K. & France, said earlier in May, the overall Russian losses are set to be around 500,000.

"An estimate Russian losses at 500,000, including 150,000 deaths," French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said on May 3. Putin's soldiers aggression with little regard for lives of its own  is likely to continue, behind the figure lies a potential demographic and economic time bomb Putin don't f..k can continue to ignore. He don't f..k care at all.

What are the latest figures?. According to Ukrainian figures, as of May 25, Russia has lost 500,000 troops, figures from Gen-Staff Ukraine's Armed Forces (no specify killed or wounded).
The overall consensus that it includes dead, wounded, missing and captured.

In Feb, Zelensky said 180,000 Russian troops had been killed since start of all-out war. & said that over 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed during the same time. Western officials gave similar estimates too on Russian battlefield losses.

Speaking to Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe said: "Russia's failure is already apparent." But Docherty UK minister of state (Armed Forces) said U.K estimates Russian losses over (estimate) approximately 450,000 personnel have been killed or wounded, & tens of thousands more have already deserted since conflict start" said in parliament.

Number of personnel killed serving in Russian private military companies (PMCs) is not clear," a U.S. estimate reported on Dec. 12 put the total at 315,000. On the same day, the Ukrainian figure was 340,650.

How accurate are the figures?....

Meet the Peaky Blinders - Ukraine's drone squad defending Kharkiv. In village of Lyptsi, forces appear have blunted Russia’s surprise offensive, weeks ago, they were rapidly advancing towards Kharkiv. But with help of reinforcements Ukraine is slowly stemming the tide.

Threat from north has not gone away. Lyptsi is still a target. There’s heavy thud of shells landing nearby as we drive at speed through ruined and deserted streets with elite Ukrainian unit. Two of the team point shotguns out of window scan the sky for kamikaze drones. They’ve become one of the most potent weapons of this war.

Ukrainian unit are use them too. They themselves call Peaky Blinders, after cult TV series. Oleksandr, their leader, says at outbreak of war they turned up to guard their streets with shotguns, wearing civilian clothing. He says it was like a scene from the hit show.

But they’re no longer a rag-tag team of volunteers. They’re now battle-hardened and have been trained by Western special forces. They’re now the high-tech Peaky Blinders, using cheap, mass-produced small drones.

Nevertheless, they’ve kept the name and wear flat caps in camouflage, with their motto embroidered on the back - “To Find and Destroy”.

Russia's premature launch of offensive in northern Kharkiv Oblast proved to be failure – ISW, the Study of War (ISW) says Russia's premature start of offensive ops has derailed its success in the north of Kharkiv Oblast. Based on the data analysed, the ISW noted that Russian troops launched their offensive in northern Kharkiv Oblast with limited forces and have not yet moved significant reserves there, leading to a slowdown in Russian advance and offensive operations.

"This decreasing tempo is likely presenting Ukrainian forces with tactical opportunities to counterattack, although Ukrainian forces are not yet conducting a limited counteroffensive operation that aims to push Russian forces completely out of northern Kharkiv Oblast," the report said.

The distribution of Russian units operating in northern Kharkiv & apparent hesitation of the Russian military to engage available reserves in combat suggests Russian forces are likely trying to bring their Northern Grouping of Forces (NGF) planned final strength b4 intensifying offensive ops. Kyiv reportedly had 35,000 troops in border area at start of offensive on 10 May, while Ukrainian indicated Russia intended to deploy between 50,000 and 70,000 soldier. Analysts says Russian may launched offensive in northern Kharkiv Oblast earlier than planned, employing an insufficient number of personnel, hoping to gain a foothold b4 arrival of US military aid to the front makes the task challenging..

Russian forces reportedly succeeded in taking Ukrainian forces by surprise on 10 May, tactically significant gains in areas Ukrainian said were less well-defended. Ukraine's State Investigation (SBI) says had opened investigation into inadequate preparation of Ukrainian defence & abandonment positions on the Lypky & Vovchansk fronts.
SBI noted had allowed Russian advance towards 2nd line defence. Although it is possible Russia's military commanders considered concentration of larger force would alert Ukrainian defenders and prevent an opportunity for an ops surprise, Russia's decision not immediately bring in reserves likely prevented it from making rapid gains and deeper penetration.

"Ukrainian now established defensive positions, have likely expended their tactical opportunity to make relatively rapid gains against lightly-held positions in this area," Russian Ambassador to US categorically rejected. President Zelenskyy's legitimacy outlined Russia's maximalist conditions for peace negotiations during an interview with Newsweek on 25 May.

In addition to defending Ukraine's airspace, F-16s customized with long-range missiles can improve Ukraine's strike capacity — a  step as Kyiv tries to halt Moscow's momentum on the battlefield.

"Our task is to use the first F-16 on the battlefield this year and in such way fortify our positions," Zelenskyy said.

The Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway have previously offered up dozens of F-16s to support Ukraine. The US Air Force is training Ukrainian pilots to fly them.

Ukraine could still strike into Russia from its own airspace with the F-16, but the usage restriction limits the plane from deeper attacks and prevents the sighting of a US-made plane overflying Russian land; the US has imposed similar caveats on other weapons

A NATO country says it could join Ukraine's war with Russia if 2 conditions are met. His remarks about French soldiers defending Ukraine are among the most hawkish by a Western leader.

France Doubles Down on Weapons to Ukraine, Top Official Says Russia Leaves No Option but Arms Build-Up. Precision-guided AASM bombs will be rigged for Danish and Dutch F-16 fighter jets Ukraine expects in May or June. Paris also plans to send excellent howitzers and old Africa-capable vehicles

France is fully committed to throwing its military-industrial might behind Ukraine’s war effort, and Paris’ immediate priority is arming Kyiv with high-tech precision-guided bombs and advanced artillery pieces, French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a govt presentation to media called “Industrial Strengthening: Arms and Munitions,” Lecornu said his govt intends to overhaul France’s military production, increase capacity and output, & that the Ukrainian military will receive a healthy share of the weaponry.

Russian aggression in Europe has forced France to take steps to re-arm and improve its ability to protect itself from conventional military threats, and committing the resources to arm Ukraine is a key piece of that strategy, the defense minister said during a meeting with reporters lasting almost two hours.

Lecornu told reporters France in 2024 intends to manufacture 600 AASM guided bombs and that production will double to 1,200 in 2025, and that deliveries to Ukraine should continue as planned.

One of the most sophisticated bomb guidance systems manufactured, AASM or Armement Air-Sol Modulair is a guidance kit fitted to a conventional bomb that uses flip-out wings, a laser-seeker, inertial guidance, GPS positioning, movable control fins and a small rocket engine to fly a munition to precise locations.

FRANCE WEAPONS for UKRAINE -  Macron Backs Ukraine's Right to Strike Russian Military Bases. His comments come amid heated debates on whether to permit Ukraine to strike inside Russia with Western-supplied long-range weapons. AASM guidance system could theoretically plant a powerful 250 kg. munition within one meter of an aiming point, at a range in excess of 70 km.

The weapon, sometimes called HAMMER, was purpose-designed for use by France’s front-line Rafale and Mirage 2000 tactical multi-role fighters. It has been in production since 2012. On Ukrainian battlefield, Russian bomb guidance kits currently used about half as capable as an AASM-fitted bomb, or its comparable to US counterpart, laser-guided JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) bomb guidance kit.

Lecornu said discussions with Ukrainian military engineers are progress to adapt French AASM bomb kit to American F-16 fighter jets donated to Kyiv from Denmark & Netherlands. The first six F-16s, with trained Ukrainian pilots, reportedly will reach the Ukrainian Air Force by May or June.

In March Ukrainian AirForce has used modified MiG-29 fighters to make AASM drops. Big Grin

French President Emmanuel Macron on Jan. 16 first announced planned deliveries of 50 AASM bomb kits a month. The first publicly reported use of the weapon was on March 4, in the southern Kherson sector.

Production of France’s powerful SCALP cruise missile, a weapon used by Ukraine in multiple successful strikes against Russian warships, will be restarted, and in 2024, 40 of the missiles will be produced, Lecornu said.

France will up its artillery ammo manufacture to about 100,000 shells in 2024, Lecornu said, munitions 80,000 155mm rounds will got to Ukraine. Currently, French 155mm shell delivery to Ukraine is “reaching” 2,000 units a month, Some military analysts questioned whether French industry is capable of more quadrupling national shell production in nine months.

French govt will, if needed, use constitutional powers allowing the state to requisition industrial capacity, set arms manufacturer priorities, and mandate minimum stocks, to accelerate the production of shells & other military material for Ukraine, Lecornu said.

“We need things to go quicker, to change faster. This is important for Ukraine and the credibility of our military,” he said. “I have authority.”

Production of France’s advanced Caesar self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine is on track and a total 78 systems will be delivered to Kyiv by the end of 2024,  France, Denmark, and Ukraine are financing production at facilities owned by Nexter, the major French arms manufacturer.

France is fully committed to throwing its military-industrial might behind Ukraine’s war effort, and Paris’ immediate priority is arming Kyiv with high-tech precision-guided bombs and advanced artillery pieces, French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a government presentation to media called “Industrial Strengthening: Arms and Munitions,” Lecornu said his government intends to overhaul France’s military production and increase capacity and output, and that the Ukrainian military will receive a healthy share of the weaponry.

PUBLIC OPINION: Do you support deploying European troops to Ukraine?. French President Macron's statement that under certain conditions French troops could be sent to Ukraine has sparked controversy. Do you support the idea of European troops being deployed to Ukraine?

French President Emmanuel Macron drew a line in the sand, refusing to say that he would never send French troops to Ukraine, as Russia continues its full-scale invasion. Some say Macron went too far. Others applauded the French leader.

Kyiv Post asked people on the streets of Paris and London whether or not they supported sending European troops to defend Ukraine. Most of the people Kyiv Post spoke to were not quite ready to commit European troops to Ukraine under the current circumstances. Some said that it should've already been done.

Biden quietly allowed Ukraine to strike Russia with US arms but 'solely near Kharkiv,' media report.

Biden quietly allowed Ukraine to strike Russia with US arms but 'solely near Kharkiv. May 30, 2024.

U.S. President Joe Biden's admin secretly lifted ban for Ukraine to strike Russian territory with American weapons, but "solely near the area of Kharkiv," Politico reported on May 30, citing three unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

The U.S. and German officials have repeatedly said that they do not support or encourage Kyiv's strikes with their weapons on Russian soil, reportedly due to fears this would lead to an escalation of the war.

"The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use U.S. weapons for counter-fire purposes in Kharkiv, so Ukraine can hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them," an unnamed American official told Politico.

The source added that Washington's policy of allowing long-range strikes "has not changed," and Ukraine cannot use U.S. weapons to hit military targets deep inside Russia.
