Twenty days into her new post as Ukraine's new military rights commissioner, Olha Reshetylova said that she had already received 3,876 appeals.
In what she described as a preliminary assessment in a Facebook post about her first days on the job, Reshetylova said that lack of treatment and referrals to military medical commissions and problems moving between military units are the two leading causes for the appeals she received. 

More than 3,500 of the appeals have been relevant to her post and concern protecting the rights of soldiers. A portion of these concerning advice or clarification, which she referred to lawyers working "almost around the clock."

The rest of the appeals are substantive. Although each of them has its own individual problems, in general, of course, you can already see trends and separate blocks of problematic issues," Reshetylova wrote.

Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating a case of Russian troops summarily executing six Ukrainian captives in the embattled Donetsk Oblast, the Prosecutor General’s Office said on Jan. 23.

The statement came in reaction to a video circulating on social media, recorded by Russian soldiers, that apparently shows the execution of the six prisoners of war (POW). The footage also shows a seventh Ukrainian soldier lying on the ground, whose fate is unknown.

"According to preliminary information, during an assault against Ukrainian positions in Donetsk Oblast, Russian soldiers took six Ukrainian soldiers captive and subsequently shot them," the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.

As soldiers fighting for Ukraine try to hold onto hundreds of sq km, they seized in Russia's Kursk region in August, some describe facing relentless waves of determined North Korean troops, Russian units with improved tactics & Ukraine's own struggles with exhaustion, sinking morale. "I honestly don't think we're going to be able to hold it for much longer," said Chapi, a foreign fighter who spoke to CBC in Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine, about 15 km from Russian border. "What I'm hoping for is they just freeze lines for 6 mths. Give the politicians time to try and negotiate."

Chapi, like other soldiers CBC News spoke with, is only being identified by his call sign in accordance with Ukrainian military rules. He and other members of his assault unit describe a worsening situation along the Kursk front, where there are not enough troops or weapons to counter a Russian military bolstered by thousands of skilled North Korean soldiers,  in August 2024, it invigorated military and the Ukrainian public who were weary after seeing Russia continue to claw away at land in the country's southeast. But over recent months, Ukraine has been losing the territory it took. Chapi, who has been fighting in Ukraine since 2022, says with the military short on troops, and with mobilized men who lack experience desperately trying to fill gaps on the frontline, peace talks can't come soon enough.
