Russia is targeting Ukrainian airfields before the first of Ukraine's F-16s arrive. Experts told BI that Russia is wary of the boost the aircraft will likely give to Ukraine. One expert said Russian forces are "going to go for every F-16 base they can find." Ukraine has not confirmed where it will keep its F-16s, but Russia said after one recent airbase strike that it was targeting airfields it believes Ukraine will use to house the planes.
Russian strikes have been recorded at multiple Ukrainian bases in recent weeks, includes Russia claiming to have hit Ukraine's Mirgorod air base, 100 miles from border with Russia, destroying five Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jets. Ukraine confirmed the attack & said there were some losses, "but not the ones the enemy claims."
Michael Clarke, a Russia and Ukraine expert and a UK national security advisor, said Russia is "very worried about F-16s because of their capabilities, no question about that."

Kapustin Yar Is Russia’s Most Prestigious Space Test Facility. Ukraine Just Hit It With An Explosive Drone. For Russia after WWII drew to a close, Soviet/Western officials raced to scoop up Nazi rockets & Nazi rocket scientists. In May 1946, Soviet Union created a new rocket test range outside Moscow to experiment with ex-Nazi V-2 rockets, in many ways, Kapustin Yar range is birthplace of the Soviet space program. Tests of the V-2s spurred development of domestically made rockets that lofted the first Soviet satellites into orbit. Seventy-seven yrs after first captured V-2 blasted off from Kapustin Yar, sprawling range—3,000 square miles in area, to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency assessment from 1990s—is a target in Russia’s wider war on Ukraine.
On or b4 July 9, @least one Ukrainian drone struck a rocket assembly building at Kapustin Yar, setting it ablaze. “Historic test range in Kapustin Yar, where Stalin’s rocketeers is learning to fly Nazi ballistic missiles in 1947, is apparently de-nazified by Ukrainian drones!” quipped Russian space historian Anatoly Zak the 2nd Ukrainian strike in two weeks targeting Russian space facility. In late June, two(2) drones struck NIP-16 space communications facility in Russian-occupied Crimea, apparently been used by Russia powerful radios@NIP-16 to communicate with military satellites, so it makes sense, Ukrainians would target it.
Exactly those Ukrainians are aiming to achieve in striking Kapustin Yar is less clear. Recent years, Kremlin has tested air-defense missile systems at Kapustin Yar, including latest S-500—sole copy of which is in Crimea & may have come under Ukrainian attack recently.

US Air Force Issues First RFP for Weapon Specifically Intended for Ukraine. Proposal, issued on Wed, is for new aircraft-launched long-range weapon which the USAF has explicitly said is intended for use by Ukraine. (Extended-Range Attack Munition. US. Army reported US Air Force issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to develop a new aircraft-launched weapon on Wed July 10. The RFP was sent to 16 companies responded to an earlier Request for Interest (RFI) by USAF in January with proposals to be received >July 24.
The call to industry is for a system that is being called Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM). It explicitly says that project is intended to support Ukrainian defense requirements by providing an efficient affordable, autonomous long-range attack weapon.
This ERAM is a 500-pound (225 kilogram)-class munition - range@least 250 nautical miles (290 miles / 460 kilometers) @speed, no less than Mach 0.6 (460 mph / 740 kph). Munition’s size warhead wasn’t specified, other than say it should be a high explosive fragmentation with a level of penetrating capability & variable fuse settings.”
Army Recognition suggests Mark 82 unguided bomb could be considered a baseline for ERAM weapon. Mark 82 is a 500-pound (230 kg) filled with 196 pounds (89 kilograms) of tritonal (TNT/Al) high explosive.

Ukraine loses more than 1,000 men in battle for single village. The perilous fight to establish a bridgehead in a southern Kherson fishing village has been described as a suicide mission for soldiers. More than 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers are feared to have been killed during a symbolic battle for a single village on the left bank of the Dnipro River.
The perilous months-long fight to establish a bridgehead in the village of Krynky, a southern Kherson fishing village, has been described as a suicide mission for soldiers, in an operation seen by commanders as crucial as for pinning down Russian forces in the area. investigation by Slidstvo, the Kyiv-based news website, found that at least 262 soldiers had died and 778 are still missing after nine months of struggling to maintain a foothold in the settlement.
Ukrainian marines were sent on a daring raid across the Dnipro, the river that bisects the country, in late October last year, in an attempt to establish a bridgehead in Russian-held territory.
The cross-river incursion was made possible after Russian forces were forced to retreat from the city of Kherson in November 2022.
