I think using radiation meter to probe seafood isn't foolproof as the radioactive seafood (meat) may contain alpha radiation emitting radionuclides. Alpha radiation doesn't penetrate from the "host" well, so it will not be picked up by the meter.
But once ingested, these tiny radioactive sources can travel around the human body, exposing nearby cells to the alpha radiation.
