See what my copilot says Secrecy of Reserves...

The secrecy surrounding a country’s reserves is rooted in several reasons:
  1. National Security and Stability:
    • Disclosing detailed information about reserves could potentially weaken a country’s position in international financial markets.
    • In times of crisis, maintaining secrecy helps prevent panic, speculative attacks, or destabilization of the economy.
    • By keeping reserves confidential, governments can better manage economic shocks and maintain stability.
  2. Market Impact:
    • Publicly revealing the exact amount of reserves might lead to market speculation.
    • Investors and speculators could use this information to manipulate exchange rates, interest rates, or other financial instruments.
    • Central banks often intervene in currency markets using reserves to stabilize exchange rates. Transparency could hinder their effectiveness.
  3. Strategic Advantage:
    • Reserves can be a strategic tool for negotiations or geopolitical influence.
    • Countries may use reserves to support their currency or exert pressure on other nations.
    • Keeping the actual amount confidential allows flexibility in diplomatic and economic relations.
  4. Confidentiality Agreements:
    • Some countries hold reserves in foreign banks, which may have confidentiality agreements.
    • These agreements prevent the banks from disclosing details about the reserves without the country’s consent.
  5. Competitive Edge:
    • Nations compete globally for investments, trade, and economic influence.
    • Revealing the full extent of reserves could impact a country’s perceived strength or vulnerability.
  6. Historical Precedent:
    • Traditionally, central banks have maintained a level of secrecy around their operations.
    • This practice has continued over time, even as financial systems evolve.
In summary, while transparency is essential for accountability, maintaining some level of secrecy around reserves serves practical purposes related to national security, stability, and strategic interests .

What about SWF and Reserves.....

A sovereign wealth fund (SWF) and a country’s reserve are not exactly the same, but they are related. Let me explain:
  1. Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF):
    • An SWF is a state-owned investment fund that holds financial assets such as stocks, bonds, property, or other instruments.
    • It is comprised of money generated by the government, often derived from a country’s surplus reserves.
    • SWFs serve various purposes, including diversifying the country’s wealth, investing for the future, and supporting economic stability.
    • Funding for SWFs can come from sources like state-owned natural resource revenues, trade surpluses, bank reserves, foreign currency operations, privatizations, and governmental transfer payments.
    • Each SWF has its own objectives, risk tolerances, and investment strategies.
    • Notable examples include the Norway Government Pension Fund Global1.
  2. Country Reserves:
    • Country reserves refer to the accumulated financial assets held by a country, often in the form of foreign currency reserves.
    • These reserves are typically used to stabilize the economy, manage exchange rates, and ensure liquidity.
    • Reserves can include foreign currencies (such as U.S. dollars) obtained through exports, foreign investments, or other means.
    • While some reserves are held directly by the central bank, others may be managed through SWFs.
    • The primary purpose of reserves is to support monetary and fiscal policies and maintain economic stability.
In summary, SWFs are a subset of a country’s reserves, specifically designed for investment purposes, while reserves encompass a broader range of financial assets used for economic management and stability.

Any info that will result in public backlash is "not helpful to release" or considered "state secrets".

The real secret weapon is a President who is so politically-aligned with the Govt that he doesn't interfere at all.

The size of reserves us a good and bad thing.

Because Reserves are squeezed out of the people.and spending less on then. For example many advanced countries have a national pension scheme and universal healthcare.

National pension means once you reach a certain age the state will pay you a pension so you can live kn it without working forever.

A single payer healthcare means your hospital treatment is paid for by the govt.

When a govt choose to build big reserves means it cuts down on many things that benefit the people.

People ask what happens if country has less reserves ...what happens? The IMF and world bank has recommendations for size of reserves needed to cushion economic calamity. So anything above that is not necessary

So why Singapore govt always say reserves not enough and more is better. That boils down tk power and greed. Just like you ask a person how.mcuh is enough10M, 100M...if he reply you not matter how much it is not enough....then you have to think what this person is about. Our leadership elites want large reserves because there is big money earned in jobs managing the reserves. Just like Mr. Umbrage after his failed stint to revive NOL he was posted to Temasek ...others are posted to GIC so they have cushy jobs because reserves are big. So you ask our leadership, they will always say reserves not enough.

Rightfully a govt keeps enough reserves and use the rest to benefit the people

In Singapore there are many elderly nearing end of their lives, their healthcare and nursing care should be provided adequately together with some living expenses....we should not be stopped by the greed for the leadership to do what is right for our seniors

I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

The rest of the world ain't stupid. Our Singdollar is not strong vis-a-vis their currencies without a reason.

Our reserves are not cash kept in Milo tins under a bed. We have about one trillion dollars in reserves and they are held in various instruments.

WP is asking for the sake of asking but since many Singaporeans are not so smart, they'd think that WP is asking a good question. In fact, they are asking populist questions. But they score points, win the votes of those who don't understand reaerves, where they are invested... yadda yadda..

Only need to act and sound smart in front of the bottom 40% of voters.
