Rising COE prices affect everyone
#1

The Certificate of Entitlement (COE) is a crucial factor in determining the cost of owning a car in S'pore. It amuses me that many disgruntled S'poreans who cannot afford a car often declare that they wish to see COE premiums continuously increasing. They do not realise that when COE prices rise, there is a ripple effect on the whole economy, which affects everybody, and not merely car owners.

You don't seem to realise that rising COE premiums lead to significantly higher car prices which affects everyone who relies on taxis, PHVs or delivery services. When the cost of transportation increases, it pushes up prices for goods and services as businesses pass on their higher operational costs to consumers - regardless of whether they own a car or not.

The rising cost of living disproportionately affects lower SES households, which will widen the income gap. This has serious social implications for S'pore society as a whole.

It affects everyone yes but it hit the wallets of car owners much much more. I.e the damage sustained between a car owner and a non-car owner assuming both earn the same income.

With Cat A COEs reaching $91,383 and Cat B premiums hitting $1102,423 for Aug, car owners and those who don't have 4-wheels are definitely not on the same income level. LOL!

You forget that while the direct impact of rising COE premiums is on car owners, its indirect effects are affecting the economy, society and environment. This means that those who cannot afford cars will also be unhappy with Pay And Pay.

Even S'poreans who don't own cars are unhappy that the price of public transport is on the increase.

Even though Pay And Pay intends to reduce car ownership with high COE prices, this may not lead to a significant decrease in traffic jams with more people choosing PHVs and taxis. In any case, the Govt agrees with you that as long as the rich have the money, they may buy as many vehicles as they are able to afford.

The wealthy will merely reduce the number of cars in their household from 7 to 5 vehicles.

He doesn't realise the reduced consumer spending caused by higher living costs, owing to increased transportation expenditure. S'poreans who own or do not possess cars end up with less disposable income to spend on other goods and services. This affects various industries in our country.

To Pay And Pay, the poor are a burden while the wealthy are useful members of society who contribute to the Govt as taxpayers.

The Govt should realise that skyrocketing COE premiums will slow down economic growth. When Pay And Pay discourages car purchases, it impacts the automobile industry and related sectors like car dealerships, workshops as well as insurance companies.
