Singapore from the beginning often said to be run by "technocrats" ....LKY made no apologies about using social engineering and propaganda on the people. This is matter of fact

The technocrats best strategy is to augment ( using this term generously, otherwise supplant) this group with imported talents.

Tye technocrats look as the society as a system and not as a specific group of people and their well being.  In particular keeping the GDP output seems to be the primary measure of the success of the system and the people themselves are a tool to achieve this.

This article epitomizes a very typical US-centric cold war global politics point of view, i.e. define two camps, then start slotting "members" into each camp and then blocs of both camps start an ideological struggle (democracy vs authoritarianism). I suspect the reason for such obsession on this outdated geopolitical and international relations model is the inability of the US to get out of its comfort zone.

The last time such a model was applied, US was triumphant and USSR lost. They seem to be desperately trying to frame the current situation as yet another 1950 - 1990 cold war as there is comfort that if history were to repeat itself, US will once again emerge as victors.

The reality is there are no real two camps in the world currently. CN and RU support each other on 80% of the issues because it suits their needs, not because of some ideological authoritative alliance to counter somebody else. Similarly US and EU have overlapping interest in maybe 50% of the issues, so they converge on the issues they share common interest. However, in the remaining 50% we can see the EU is actually adversarial to US interest on matters such as the Ukraine issue and the continued tightening of trade relations and economic cooperation with CN.

Similarly for other areas such as Africa, South America and Asia - countries directly work with countries that benefit them. Both US and CN are free to approach them and "bid" for their support - whoever wins the "bid" gets the contract. These countries are not interested in permanently planting themselves in one camp to fight against another camp. There isn't even a concept of "camp" to begin with, it's just a figment of imagination amongst US politicians.

It's like two telcos competing for customers. Telco US has a longer history and brand awareness, but their price plans are more expensive and they demand you to sign an exclusive contract with them for 3 years. Telco CN is a new kid on the block, it lacks the branding and track record of Telco US, but offers cheaper price plans and most importantly, there is no exclusive contract - you are free to sign up both Telco US and Telco CN at the same time depending on your needs. The only thing Telco CN demands from customers is not to damage their core interest by sharing confidential commercial information or poaching their talent.

The challenge is Telco US shows no sign of adapting their practices to suit the current market landscape. They not only refuse to restructure their price plans and onerous contract terms to deal with competition, but are doubling down on their marketing campaign to emphasize how branded they are and how good their quality was in the past and worse still, now demand customers to sign a 5 year exclusive plan instead. The problem is even if the advert is true, everything has a price. Having a good brand and quality track record does not mean you can continue to fleece your customers in whatever way you want without caring about what your competitors are offering.
